Case Tested without shield or model number

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case Tested without shield or model number

Post by Bfeldman »

I just picked up a Case Tested stockman at the flea market And it doesn’t have a shield or model number. It was only $15 and has years worth of grime so I don’t think the seller was trying to pull a fast one.

Any thoughts about authenticity from the case experts here?

Looks fine to me. Most Tested era knives did not have pattern numbers. Many made around WWII didn’t have shields, which were non-essential ornamentation - major components of nickel silver were needed for other purposes.

Nice find!

Looks like it could be a 6347, what's the closed length?

Most of the Case Tested knives without shields have iron bolsters as opposed to nickel silver. You can test with a magnet.

As expected y’all are a wealth of information.

Red rider: sure looks like a 6347. The knife is 3 and 3/16 inches closed

Olderdog: the bolsters do appear to be iron.

Woodwalker: this is definitely an above average find at the flea market. I also picked up another great knife so today was a good haul.

I did a basic cleaning and must say, this is a wonderful little knife. Here a post cleaning picture

The 47 pattern is 3-7/8 inches long. Almost 4 inches. Yours is probably a 6318.

Yeah. It’s definitely not almost 4 inches.

It is a 6366, very scarce junior stockman.

Thanks knifaholic. I only see one other example of these when I search for it so scarce indeed. Would y’all consider this green bone? I’m not sure I understand the distinction between green and red bone.

edit: after a deep dive I have a better understanding of the use of the terms.

Yes your knife is “greenbone”. As for being confused about green and red bone you’re not alone. There are many discussions here about the subject. Here’s just one viewtopic.php?f=4&t=66485

I’ve posted this knife to ebay. Considering it’s an unusual knife I figured some Cass collected would probably be interested. Link in my profile.

Might have been my knife
I have a green bone 66 I have posted in this forum. Yours is only one I have ever seen other than mine. Paid a lot more as well. Great find. Very scarce as Steve stated.
