Case 5249 from 1970?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case 5249 from 1970?

Post by Treejakal »

I saw this transaction on E-bay (eBay item number:163524377298) and was unaware that Case made a Copperhead in Stag in 1970. Can any expert tell me if this knife is correct. Just curious and if they did I need one.

For what is it worth......

I frequently use knifedb.com as a reference. It does not list one.

Thanks Bob, I didn't think of that resource, I did check Steve's book and there are no Stag Copperheads listed. I know there was a 1979 Bradford Centennial in Stag as part of the collectors set, but have never seen a Stag Copperhead prior to that. ::shrug::

According to Steve Pfeiffer's book "Collecting Case Knives" the 5249 was made in 1979 and 1985.

I can't find the eBay listing to look at it to see if it might have a pattern number stamped on the blade. My speculation is that it is a 6249 that has been rehandled.

The knife is in the sold file and the photos only showed 49; the first two numbers were hidden by the other blade

The 1979 5249 SSP was the first time Case ever made the copperhead in stag. You will see a lot of rehandled fantasy fakes like the one pictured.
