Case Hatchet/Knife Combo Question

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case Hatchet/Knife Combo Question

Post by Carsonishere »

Hello everyone, I have recently found these knives/hatchets in an old part of my grandfathers collection. I think that they are really interesting but I cannot find very much information on them, especially the one with the box. Does anyone happen to know the worth and maybe dates of creation of these Knives/hatchets? The one with the box also has a certificate of authenticity which I thought was rather interesting.

For what it's worth, here is a 561 Deluxe that sold last year for $640.

Welcome to AAPK. The old combo KnifAx (that's what Case called them) are very collectable. Difficult to find a set with the original box.

Here's some info that was posted a while back on the Case Collectors Club forum by the Case historian.

Knifeax Detail: Combination knife and ax. Blade and ax interchangeable in same handle. Five-inch Oriental type hunting blade. Length of ax in handle 11 1/4 inches. Length of ax blade 4 1/4 inches. Width of cutting edge on ax 2 1/2 inches. Ax and blade chromium finished. Total weight of ax, knife and handle in compact leather sheath, only 1 pound and 5 ounces, requiring no more space on the person than the ordinary hunting knife. It has met the universal approval of experienced hunters, camper, motorists, scouts and sportsmen. Indestructible pearl handle.
(I thought that was an interesting detail!)

The variations which were produced:
o 261 – Standard Ax – Walnut handle
§ Circa 1935-1957
§ 1964-1967

o 261 Deluxe – Large forged Ax head – Walnut handle
§ 1940-1957

o 561 Deluxe – Large forged Ax head – Genuine Stag handle
§ Circa 1935-1970

o 661 – Standard Ax – Bone Stag handle
§ Circa 1935-1942

o 961 – Standard Ax – Imitation Pearl handle
§ Circa 1935-1957

o 961 Deluxe – Large forged Ax head – Imitation Pearl handle
§ Circa 1935-1957
Hope that helps.
