Tex Rat 88’s?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Tex Rat 88’s?

Post by timb »

I'm new to Case knives other than than the one my dad gave me forty ago. Which I still have by the way! I picked up two new in box knives off a family friend over the weekend. There marked on the boxes "Muskrat" and "Tex Rat 88". The model numbers on the box are 09150 and 09154. I can't find much on the net about these, only the two blade Muskrat models. Are these four blade Tex Rat 88's still made or are they a discontinued model? I wish he'd have had these with the Stag handle, but the Red and Chestnut were the only two of these he had.

Also is it o.k. to store these long term in the original boxes in my gun safe, or should I store them out of the boxes? I never been a knife collector, but these two are so nice to look at, they kind of give me the itch.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Welcome to AAPK. We like pictures here so please post some pics of your knives. Based on a search on the Case Collectors Club forum it looks like the "Texas Muskrat" was a Shepherd Hills Cutlery SFO sometime around 2009. They were apparently offered with serialized scrolled boosters and plain bolsters. I've not seen any around so probably no longer made but you can contact Case by email at consumer-relations@wrcase.com and ask them for more info.

Regarding storage, I have some that have been in boxes in their wrappers for years, with dessicant in the cabinet (not in the boxes) and haven't had any problems. However they have been carefully wiped down with Tuf-glide (a protectant corrosion preventative used for metals like firearms and knives) to remove fingerprints etc., before being re-wrapped and placed into their boxes.

Most of my collection knives have no boxes or wrappers. Older knives were not boxed individually. Those I store in Sackups.

I’d tried to search this forum, but couldn’t get any results. I’m out of town at the moment, but will try to post pics this weekend. My friend had already sold off probably fifty Case knives when I picked these two out just because I liked their looks.

My search wasn't on AAPK. It's was on the Case Collectors Club forum. That's where I look for info on newer (1990 or later) knives because that's what many members there collect.

Wiping down some knives today and came across these 4 blade Tex Rats. I believe there were only 100 made in each handle material with scrolled bolsters. Never have been able to find the right deal on the scrolled stag.
