An Antique Case but Who gets in?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Keith what are the clues that make you believe that one is older?
Dimitri told me!!!!!
The wood is a different wood than the ones like yours for one and a different sticker are two things I see.

Aha! Well Dimitri would know. I see the difference in the decal. ::tu::

Greg, I got home about an hour ago and unfortunately cannot find my 60s catalogs. They're not with the others. I moved my office a couple of years ago and they must have been misplaced in the process. But I did find a bunch of other knife-related stuff I've been missing! ::facepalm:: Sorry I can't get you the 60s display picture yet but I'll look some more tomorrow.

I'm not even sure there's display pictures in them (there weren't any in the 1970 catalog). As donjr said there are some pictures of displays in knifeaholic's book. The bad news is, the picture of a display cabinet on page 292 says its from 1968, looks to be made more like the one Keith posted and has the older style Case decal. The "XX Cutlery" below "Case" is black, not gold. If that's typical of other cabinets from 1968 and prior (I'm not saying it is cuz I don't know) your XX knives weren't ever in a display cabinet like the one you just bought. ::shrug::

Maybe Steve will see this thread. I'd bet he knows and he for sure has way more catalogs than me.

All in all I'd say "who cares". Put the XX knives it it - 99.9% of people that see it won't know anyway!

Case used that general style of counter display from the Tested era onward, until 1983.

The one posted is somewhat newer in that age range, most likely about 1964 until 1983 or so.

The earlier examples have the wood rounded (rather than squared off) on front where the CASE XX logo is, and also have a different style logo.

The very last ones of that style from 1983 have a spring-loaded latch inside at the top so that the top can be removed to access the display board without using a screwdriver.

I have saved hundreds of photos of older Case displays, I'll see if I can post some examples when I have time in a few days.

Greg, super nice presentation! Was it your wife's idea to move it outside the house? Don't forget to take it back inside tonight :)

Thanks for the compliments guys. I put a new surface on the board and used some spray adhesive that said may cause nerve damage to legs and arms if inhaled so I figured I better go outside with it. :D
