The Case "OOPS" P172

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

The Case "OOPS" P172

Post by edge213 »

I found this at a yard sale today.
Mark side tang stamp:
CASE XX (regular S)
P172

Pile side tang stamp:
••••••••••
HAND MADE USA

Not being an expert, I assumed this was a 1970 10 dot.
After rereading Steve's book I found I have a 1980 10 dot " OOPS" P172. See page 216 of "Collecting Case Knives" by Steve Pfeiffer 2nd edition.

The P172 Buffalo was first introduced in 1971 as a 9 dot. In 1980 when Case went back to 10 dots with the "lightning s" it was the first 10 dot P172. However, some blades with the old "regular s" stamp went through production. Only about 600.

I lucked into one today.

Excellent find, David! I wish I we had such yard sales around here.

Gary, it's usually go to about 100 yard sales before I find anything interesting. Just got lucky.

It wasn't out for sale, but I always ask if they have any old pocket knives. The guy went in the house and brought this out.

Nice find David. I've always loved those Buffalo and Bulldog Case knives.
