Ode To The 07

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Since it's "Bovine Bone" I'm thinking it's probably a Holstein.

Found this hiding in a knife roll. I have a few of the newer 07 but I still like the original pattern the best.

Nice color on that one, Potechop. Don't see a lot of Brown Bone on the pre-1970 6207s and yours is especially nice...Beauty!

Well, Smitty, your new 49s may not be 07s, but they're certainly "kissing cousins" (6th generation multiples). Of course, I am particularly fond of the Blue 49W, but both are very attractive knives. Now you've got The Monkey wondering why I ever stopped collecting Copperheads...so, thank you very much for that, buddy  . Great scores on both. ::tu:: ::tu::

Well boys & girls, I'm sure you'll all be happy to know that The Monkey finally tracked down and captured the elusive Red Scroll 5207...which may very well prove to be the final feather in my Mini-T cap. It's been a good run and I've had a lot of fun, but it looks like it all comes down to this...game, set & match. :)

That's a great looking red scroll 5207 but is it really the last Mini-T you need? I think not. For one thing you've suffered too long without an 8507 with pear and a Wharncliff blade. I guess the fat ones are more to my taste than yours. Do you have all the other varieties of Case's stag, prime, vintage, red, midnight? During the 1980s Case dyed stag green, purple blue and orange. I do not know which they used on Mini-Ts. I have other Case patterns with vintage stag and no left end bolsters, bald head knives. It's likely they made Mini-Ts that way. Maybe you've got them all?

By the way, I enjoyed looking at your 5507 and rattlesnake 6307 a while ago. They nice ones!

I wouldn't mind getting an 8507 mainly because, unlike the 5507 and 6507, the MOP version is the only one that includes a Wharncliffe blade; but, I just can't bring myself to pay the outrageous asking prices every seller seems to think it's worth. My 5507 cost $140, which is more than I wanted to pay but still $60-$90 less than any others I've ever seen for sale on eBay. To be perfectly honest, the "relatively low price" compared to every other _507 I have ever seen--especially in Stag--is really the only reason I decided to get it. But, once I got it I discovered that...

...despite its ungainly heft & girth, it actually makes a very nice display knife; I like looking at the blades all fanned out. ::nod::
P4080005.JPG

The only other 07 I keep out on display is this Smooth Natural Bone 6207 etched with all the early Case tang stamps (later years' tang stamps are shown on the display stand faceplate)
P4080006.JPG

I believe I have nearly all the Case Stag 07s...here are a few you may remember from an earlier discussion (I've added a couple more since then such as the blue and red scroll and two or three others).
Case Stag 07 Blade Etch.JPG
I used to have a V5207 but, like pretty much every Vintage Stag Case knife I've ever seen (regardless of pattern), I really didn't like the stag covers so I sold it. If/When I see a V5207 with decent looking stag, I expect I will probably get it...so, I suppose there's always that (remote) possibility of adding one more Case 07 to my pile. (BTW--I'm now focusing on adding more Queen / Schatt & Morgan 51s to Mini-T mountain...I'm not finished collecting Mini Trappers altogether...just Case 07s...and only until Case releases more 07Ws, naturally.)

To the best of my knowledge, Case has only ever released one version of a bare head (bald head) Mini Trapper: the 1997 CCC Jr. Member 61007 (yes, with two "0"s) in Green Jigged Bone...and I do happen to have one of them, too.
1997 CCC Jr 61007.JPG
I used to have two but OCD Monkey made me get rid of the one that was missing the pattern number tang stamp because it was driving him crazy. :-? ::cb:: ::disgust::
1997 Case CCC Jr 61007 Pile Side.JPG

As for the dyed stag...I have a Midnight Stag 5207...
2017 5207 Midnight Stag.JPG

...and a Red Stag R5207...
Case R5207 Red Stag.JPG
...but I have never seen any Stag 07s dyed any other colors. I used to have a blue stag and a green stag mini copperhead (62109)...but both were sold when I switched to collecting 07s. I've never seen purple or orange stag (on any pattern).

I would have more _507s if I liked the selection of blades better. Only the pearl one has a good selection of blades and, like you wrote, sellers don't give them away. I have about $80 tied up in a M5507 user. The ebay seller described it as like new. As received its master clip blade was bent so bad I had to flex it back toward its blade well before it could be closed. After bending, sanding and polishing I have a M5507 that is worth what I paid. The seller had minimal feedback and lousy pictures. I did carry it for awhile in a Swill Army Knife pouch and got to like it. I used the little clip blade more than I thought I would.

I've only seen a few auctions for knives with stag Case dyed purple and orange. They were 1980s 5254 standard Trappers.

Nice looking Founder's Barlow. I like the 43 pattern and it gives you a sizable chunk of stag to admire.

MAHALO jerryd, Floyd, John (jmh58), John (Lansky1), Smitty, Tom (TPK), Philip and Modern Slip Joints...you guys have all been great supporters of/contributors to this 07 thread which I greatly appreciate. I hope the others--members & 'lurkers' alike--who read the "Ode" have found it to be mildly interesting, perhaps even somewhat informative or at least slightly entertaining whether or not they chose to make comments or add photos of their own 07s. (The Monkey is so vain he would've posted photos and commentary even if absolutely no one else bothered to read it.) ::nod::
