Case & Case related knives over 100 years old

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Looks like a nice specimen to me. ::tu:: Hard to find pattern, discontinued at some time in the Tested era. I have a couple of 06221-1/2 examples, not as old as that one and not in as good a shape.

I agree with Ken - it is a nice example. ::tu:: It doesn't seem like Case made very many tipped bolster pattern. The oval shield with raised letters is very unusual to find, in my experience.

I have a very old 4 1/2 inch Case 5391 that belonged to my Great-Grandfather. My G-Grandfather, a Kentucky farmer, died in 1933 (at age 70) and from the worn bone handles, I suspect it was made not long after the turn of the century. I doubt it's worth much because it evidently started out as a 3 blade knife and one of the blades broke. The remaining blades are awl, (nearly 3 inches long) and a shorter 2 inch blade. My Dad said it was his granddad's stock knife, using the awl to work on harness and the exceptionally sharp smaller blade for castration of farm animals. Someone, probably my G-Grandad, took one of the pins out of the knife, removed the broken blade and put it back together using a piece of wire as the pin (times were tough). My Dad who lived with his grandfather till he died, said he never knew it had once been a three blade knife. Does anyone have any information about a 5391 with an awl as the main blade? and does anyone have any idea what type of blade the broken one might have been. I'm debating on whether and how to restore it.

Thanks

Ty Ken  Not so much I Dont Value this piece , I do. Like You say When i Looked it over In the condition i got it in , There Could Not have been to many left , The pin Crack in bone allowed the Blades to swap ,Thus krinking the poor little Pen /With the Pattern #'s on it ::facepalm:: With out the Crack stabilized the knife it non funtional , I No What your thinking ,Very Old , very fragile , Very dry , Very Collectible , Good Looking  I have already fixed the Krinked Pen , Which is down
No changes other than stabilizing the Integrity of the Piece will be done to it as you say a rare example and I am very happy to have it , But Some further enhancements to the covers are in the works , got me some ideas to make it worth saving , So Bare with ,, K.C.

Bob that's a mighty interesting story and I sure would like to see a picture of your knife. The 5391 was a large whittler pattern and an awl would have been a peculiar blade configuration for a whittler. Is there a pattern number or a tang stamp on either of the blades?

Welcome to AAPK Bob. To my knowledge the 5391 was never made with an awl blade. However I’ve seen a number of old knives that have been sharpened down to the point that the blades had the appearance of being an awl. Some pictures of your great grandfather’s knife would be great to see. ::tu::

If you need help with how to post pictures, here’s a link to the instructions. viewforum.php?f=98 Just scroll down until you find the thread with instructions for your situation (ipad, PC, Android, etc).
