what is the rarest case knife you have??

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

I sure enjoyed seeing these beautifully crafted rare case knives. Thanks to everyone, and congrats on owning such true nice works of art. Dont know if anyone is still checking the threads here, but here is one of the few rarities that I own... hope you all like it. Small Dr style with cracked ice handles. Long pull. I hadn't seen one before, but I know there are much more experienced collectors here. ...is it fairly rare guys?

Sorry but I can’t tell much about your knife without better pictures. What is the closed length? (I don’t smoke so the cigarette doesn’t help). They made several different patterns so knowing the closed length and good clear close-up pictures are needed to tell which pattern it is. If in mint or near mint condition it would be rare, as those with cracked ice handles were celluloid so most didn’t survive this long without cracking, shrinking or just disintegrating altogether. From your pictures I can’t tell how well yours has fared other than they aren’t disintegrated.

Unfortunately many collectors won’t buy a celluloid knife, or if they will they won’t spend a lot for one because you never know when they’re going to go off, and the investment go up in fumes. In any case we’d all like to see some better pictures. ::tu::

Its 2 5/8 long. Closed. The 1 small crack is the only flaw throughout the hole knife. Very good shape. Just didn't know for sure how rare it is. I have tried looking it up. No good on the year and handle. I appreciate the the insight. Lots of knowledge here...

Probably a 9282 pattern as Larry said. Sargent’s shows one like it but with a bail, says 2-3/4 inches. Not bad for 75+ year old celluloid. Like I said previously it’s near impossible to find one that’s not cracked and shrunk like yours, or worse. Thanks for showing it. ::tu::

BTW I would not recommend keeping it or any other celluloid in that knife roll. Celluloid needs air. And if it should go bad in an enclosed space it will take the knife and others enclosed in that space with it. Don’t ask me how I know. Do a search here for “out gassing” or “off gassing” for more info and examples.

I have no idea. Personally I won’t spend more than $40 for a celluloid knife - that’s all the risk I’m willing to take. (That’s not an offer.). But that’s just me. If you want to sell it put it on eBay with a low opening bid, 7 day auction set to end on a Sunday evening. Lots of good clear close-up pictures. It will find its own value.

Outstanding. The 6465 is indeed a rare one, and that looks like a beauty! Great old worm groove bone. Somewhere in this thread several pages back is some discussion about the 6365/and 6465 patterns and IIRC a picture of another one.
