087 ?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

087 ?

Post by FRJ »

I'm confused as to what I bought at the flea market today.
In spite of the yellowish color of the covers in the photograph I believe the covers are white Delrin.
Liners are nickel. Shield is pinned. 3 5/16", probably supposed to be 3 1/4".
I was thinking it is a 087 in terms of size but the sheepfoot/spey and the white Delrin don't square with
Steve's description in his book.
No other stamping other than the one shown on the mark side clip.

During the Tested era the 087 was made with both white composition (43087) and yellow composition (33087). It was not Delrin because Delrin hadn’t been invented until after the Tested era. Whatever it was (celluloid?) it was prone to shrinking and cracking with age so not many have survived as original. I’ve never seen an 087 that didn’t have a pen though. But there’s a lot I haven’t seen. ::shrug::

Thank you, Ken.
The white composition seems to be stable on this one.

I don't know where that spey came from? :)

It is a 43087. The white cell often turned yellowish. Not in my book because I did not have the space to show or list all the tested variations.

Joe - will you be at Marlboro in September?

Thank you Steve, for your comments. ::tu::

I'm up in the air about attending the show.
Depends on if I can get someone to care for my girl.
Thanks for asking.

Very nice find Joe. That angled letter shield is one you don't come across very often.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
