Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
I have a friend who picked up this same knife, he was quite blown away, he normally goes have GEC. do you think this is standard craftsmanship or is case stepping it up?RalphAlsip wrote:My new Case Tribal Lock with smooth antique bone arrived today. It has a heftier feel than I was expecting, but still very thin. It opens and closes smoothly and locks up tight with no blade play.
I took pictures along side a large Case Copperlock for comparison. The Copperlock feels significantly lighter and smaller in the hand than the tribal lock. I intend to carry this one.

Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
Zach, The short answer is that I believe the Tribal Lock is a fantastic knife and an incredible value for the money it costs.
The longer answer is... The Tribal Lock is a TB knife. Someone else can probably explain more accurately, but I believe this means it was designed by Tony Bose and manufactured and distributed by Case. As opposed to designed and manufactured by Tony Bose and distributed by Case. Regardless of the reason, my Tribal Lock example is noticeably better than recent Case knives (e.g., Copperlock) that I have.
In my opinion, the Tribal Lock compares favorably the high end "production" knives from other (somewhat) mass producers (e.g., GEC) that I have. Some folks will likely cite blade steel as a deficiency. The fit and finish are outstanding - no snags or gaps to be felt. The operation is smooth and the "snappiness" into lock position, pressing the unlock mechanism, and back to closure is very satisfying to me. The size is substantial and reassuring as well as comfortable.
I really like the knife and it is well worth the money.

Zach, I can see why you're scarfing those up. Those are some mighty fine looking knives right there.

Looks like you're on a roll now XxTestedxX! Have you picked up any of the new rough blacks Case has produced in the last 10 years or so? I'm curious how they compare.

Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
yes, I have a rough black SOD buster, the material seems very durable, just a little duller than the pre 1965 stuff. I have considered completing that set. but not on my TO DO list yet.

Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
Got this one a couple of months ago, just getting around to photographing it. Rare knife, but it has some issues. File blade is short, pearl is chipped along edge on mark side, broken on pile side. Odd thing is the blades don't appear to have ever been sharpened, walk-and-talk very good.:

Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
Thanks Keith. I'm gonna contact Case to see if their repair service will put new pearl handles on it. That's about as close to restoring it as I will attempt. Wish I could find a replacement for the broken file blade but not holding out much hope for that.

Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
My own TL is headed back to the dealer for one with a little better F&F (including the ability to safely snap the blade closed! ) so the only new Case I have is rather ho-hum...
This one's not new but it is new to me, thanks to AAPK's own Muskrat Man!

Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
Very nice knives gents! Great variety in everybody's new pick ups, some real beauties being posted. My latest is by no stretch of the imagination a beauty, but it is a definite HOK, and I do think there is some beauty to be found in that well earned patina. Another addition to the 8 dot pile, and one that has been hard to find in good condition for a low price. Everything is tight and snappy on this one...6445R

Great old knife Mike my friend. Good pattern. I only have one but it is the first and only knife my Dad bought for me. Friendship Indiana 1974 or 75'. I was ten. Still EDC it once in awhile.
For some reason I don't have hardly any 2 dots unless I would send them your way my friend. Hope life finds you and yours well.

Re: Newest Case Pick-Ups
Thanks Jerry, very cool that you remember the when and where of your Dad buying the knife for you. I can see where it would make a useful edc....Just for the record, it's 8 dots that I am accumulating, not 2 dots...I am pretty sure you know that though, just a typo I'm sure...and thanks for the sentiments, much appreciated.zp4ja wrote:Great old knife Mike my friend.
