Strange markings on a 3-eye
Strange markings on a 3-eye
I was looking over on eBay and saw this one (half-whittler?).
It has the old eye logo on the tang stamp, but nothing under it.
Kind of like the logo on the pile side of the straight-line stamps.
Also it just has 'Germany' on the pile side.
Does this look unusual to you guys?
Thanks!

Re: Strange markings on a 3-eye
Keith,
If I remember correctly, according to Joe Dobbs article, the oldest of 13 etch variations is this one. The Eye Logo on the pile side of the tang further IDs the knife as amongst the older or oldest variations. The shield does not seem to be the older shape. The shield is not the one I call the elongated shield but I think the knife is not only OK but one of the really old ones.
I hope Joe will join in as I am anxious to see if he agrees.

Re: Strange markings on a 3-eye
Keith, I believe this one is authentic and I don't see anything unusual about it. It is a model 26 in the catalogs. It was marketed here in the U.S. with the Eye Brand logo and also the Fan Brand etching and logo. I have seen the model 26 and its slightly longer brother the model 30 with at least 3 different types of shields. In my experience the plain unmarked shields would represent the oldest knives. I have not found any information regarding the use and size of the plain shields. Seems they show up randomly, either small or elongated, on different patterns, but they are common on the older Eye Brands.

I see what you guys are saying, but what I meant to point out is that the eye logo (without any script at all) is on the mark side.
That logo can be seen often on the older knives on the pile side.
This knife's pile side just has 'Germany" on it.
Sorry for the confusion,

Re: Strange markings on a 3-eye
Keith, wish I could assist more on this one. I see what you are referring to but I have seen this stamping variation several times on Eye Brand and Carl Schlieper knives, which leads me to say it is not completely unusual. Consistency was not necessarily the order of the day at the Schlieper plant in Solingen. They did focus on quality of materials (particularly steel) and the finished products, but maintaining some form of consistency in how the blades were stamped and etched was not a priority. These are just my opinions although some of this has been discussed on this forum in the past.
I am now thinking about a past thread from a member of this forum that included a chart presenting some proposed dating information on Eye Brand. Could someone help with where that is located and share it. I searched past posts and was unable to locate it.

Joe and Ray,
Thanks for the replies! I wish that one was in a little better shape. Maybe I'll run across one down the line.
Happy Holidays!
