285UH variations

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

285UH variations

Post by gwelker62 »

In my quest to collect Uncle Henry knives I've come to acquire several variations of the 285UH. For posterity's sake I'll document them here.

The first 285UH, with Scharde/Walden/NY USA stamp and milled liners. S# 01354

Another Walden with milled liners, however, the S# 13283 is on the center liner.

Schrade+/USA 285UH stamp. With green bone, pretty sure this is a EOD knife. Purchased it from feebay back in 2005.

You've got a good variety. Here is a Walden with the box and paperwork.

gwelker62,
Here is a 285 UH that I picked up a couple of years ago. It seems to have a factory edge on both blades but it is a little bit of an odd ball. The knife was discussed on this forum at that time. The 1st thing that caught my eye was the nail nick on the spay blade is on the pile side. The knife is not put together with the Swinden system as the pins are obvious in the front and rear bolsters. The handles are not dinged up, they have the same basic pattern as all the UH Trappers. There were several opinions about this one. Do you suppose this one was a assembled after Schrade closed it's doors and was from pieces and parts? Wonder if there was another knife in the Schrade line that used a spay blade with the nail nick on tha side?

I bought it at an antique shop.

Interesting TF. I've never seen the nail nick on the pile side of the spey before either. However, I would think the pin thru the bolsters would indicate someone has taken the knife apart. If that's the case, the origin of that spey could be anything.

Very nice group of trappers. I was wondering if your knife with the milled liners are brass or steel??

They are brass. However, none of the UHs I know of had steel liners. They would've been nickel silver. Like this Walden 885UH.

Nickel silver yes. Thank you. I think I have an 897 like that also. Going to look when I get home. Thanks for posting those.
