WD-40 Old Timer

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

WD-40 Old Timer

Post by npeters3 »

I bought this knife the other day. It has a shield that says WD-40. The tang says MM 18 U.S.A.
It looks identical to an old timer and I am assuming that this is something that Schrade did for the WD-40 penetrating oil company.
This knife is 2 3/4" long. I would say it would be the same patter as an 18OT in an Old Timer
Does anyone have anymore information on this knife or have any of you seen any of these knives?
thanks

I'm guessing the "MM" stamp stands for Master Mechanic, a True Value house brand. Schrade made many of their knives. I'm guessing it was made for some kind of WD-40 related promotion True Value did at one point, possibly if you bought so much worth of Master Mechanic tools and/or WD-40 you got the knife free. The only knife I saw on Ebay like yours ended last week. There was also a Victorinox "Spartan" model for WD-40, still available for sale, probably because the seller wants 4X the going price for a used Spartan.

In April 1990 Schrade did a SFO for 5000 sets of 18OT's with a WD-40 shield packaged with a small can of WD-40. Order # 18WDCP.
The order was to be completed by 4/30/1990.
Schrade did a a line of OT's for Master Mechanic all stamped with MM
in 1989 Schrade did a special offer of a free can of WD-40 with a purchase of 3 different UH knives

I just saw the same knife as a "Stanley " tools version, and it sold above 20 bucks.
Kind of wish I bought it because it is just a cool collectible.

It looks to me like the Old Timer/WD-40 marketing campaign worked one time, so they decided for another round with the two different examples here. Yes, this is assuming but it is my assumption that it worked well once, so they tried it again with a little different twist.

Schrade did a couple of Uncle Henry WD-40 promotions too. These are not mine but I found them interesting enough to save the pics.
