Pattern Numbers Stamped on Tangs

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Pattern Numbers Stamped on Tangs

Post by KAW »

I have hopes of narrowing down the age of my Schrade Walden 234K, which appears to be one of the longest running model they produced. I was wondering when did they start stamping the pattern number on the tang of the back side of the blade. Please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems this practice did not begin until after becoming Schrade Walden & perhaps adopting Ulster's practice of doing such, which seems to go back many years prior to the Baer takeover.

Did it end with the discontinuance of the Schrade Walden?... or did it continue with the open stock line of Schrade Cutlery Corp.?

An inquiring mind would like to know.....
'til later....

From what I have seen I suspect pattern numbers have been on Schrade knives ever since about 1952-1954. Maybe a little earlier on some, maybe a little later on others; I would not lay any money on the table as to a more exact date.

Thanks tongueriver for your post. If that is the case, it helps narrow down the range.
