When I was a kid I thought Schrade knives were inferior because they would rust. I didn't know the difference between stainless and carbon steels. However, they were available and priced where I could afford them (from kid through college) so I acquired a couple dozen of various patterns over the years. Now that I do know more about steel, I have rediscovered these knives and they are some of my favorites. All my Schrade knives are extremely well made with regard to fit and finish. They are tough as woodpecker lips and I love the old carbon 1095. Now that the USA made ones no longer being made, they are that much more desirable to me. I've got an Old Timer baby stockman in my pocket right now and she is a fine little beauty.

I just got back from working on a site in the deep south with 3 older gentleman. Very friendly folk offering me Little Debbie snacks every lunch. All of them pulled out a Schrade OT whenever they needed to cut something throughout the course of the day.

Old Timers and Little Debbie snack cakes. Sounds like a good time to me. I like the Nutty Bars...

I have been looking for a reasonably priced 14OT for about 6 years.
I found one last Saturday at the OKCA Mini-Show in Eugene Oregon.
14OT a.jpg
14OT b.jpg
A fellow had an older Wall display with the 13OT & 14OT in it, for display only, not for sale.
I was admiring it and asked him if he had another 14OT he would sell.
He pulled this one out and said it had originally been the display but was starting to spot, so he replaced it with a mint example and was doing that with all the knives in the display.
I asked him how much he wanted for the 14 and he said $40.
I said "Sold!" & handed him 2 twenties before he had a chance to change his mind!

He had cleaned it up some and there are still a few pits on the blade, but not bad for the price.
Now I just need to find a sheath for it.

For me, that knife alone made it worth the trip to the show! ::tu::

Dale that was a good find. I purchased a mint one with a box ,it cost me four times that. They are fairly rare in reasonable order.I am still looking for a old timer compass as you said the rarest of them all.

Hey Guys, I came across this Mint Schrade and thought I would post it because I couldnt locate it in the Schrade Catalog. Its a Schrade Walden #298 in Genuine Stag. I am trying to find about what Year it was made?
Kind Regards,
Mark

I don't think they ever listed stag in the catalogs but they did make them. Yours does not have the early walden stamp which would read schrade (over) walden (over) ny. It also has a marked pattern number which early waldens didn't. If I were to guess I would say somewhere in the 50's. But that is just my guess.

Really prime example of a fantastic knife.

That looks like one of Barry Wolder's (onefartsmella) pics. One that snuck by me, I guess. Good score!

I took the "Scans" of my knife with a Scanner not a camera,,But it does look like his pics, LOL.

Did you check the liners to make sure it's not a Herman Williams creation? What ever it is, I like it. That long slender profile and the Turkish clip blade really do it for me. ::tu::

I have been watching this thread with interest. I do not wish to offend any one however I do not agree with the general concensus. I believe your knife is a rehandled knife from the late 90tys or early 2000. Schrade re released a line of Schrade walden knives . I believe that this is the tang used. Schrade in the 50tys was not doing stag. During this time Schrade was getting away from natural material delrin was the wave of the future celluloid, pearl, bone , ect were being phased out. in any event they did not produce stag like that. The first stag re releases ( natural materials) were the center piece of the 13 colonies produced for Jim Parker 1976. Herman Williams was instumental in getting Schrade to go back to natural materials. here is a example I believe of one of the knives made from that newer later release. 122431128385 ( note not same pattern just example of that line of knives) . You will notice that the stag is different as is the shield however I believe that that is the correct vintage ( from that period issue ) and marking. I agree the rehandling certainly looks like hermans work. However as was mentioned he usually marks them with initials dates ect ( but not always ) None the less I believe it is rehandled and i do not believe is an early Schrade Walden. I wish to offend NO ONE I simply wanted to state my opinion. Again i hope it does not offend . it is a beautiful knife and it is what it is. Regards LT

Could it be a very early one from before they signed them?

My apologies. That's Wallace that marks his work inside the liners. Herman stamps the tang or at least has on all I've seen.
