My latest Schrade

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Jerry that is a nice knife, looks like my Wester Bros USA. Mine is carbon and has a punch, and older bone. I think.

Recently I got an interesting Imperial scout-type knife. Allsteel, closed 3.7".
Can you help me identify and date it? Any information is interesting.

Hi Tom!
This is interesting information, but I still have questions about dating and the meaning of the letters "RX" ::hmm:: .

RX (usually written ℞) is a common abbreviation for medical prescriptions.

Many thanks!
So it's an "apothecary knife", not an advertising knife. Cool! :D

It likely was a knife given by a pharmaceutical rep to pharmacists.

Your knife is obviously a spin-off of a military Demo knife. Because of the screwdriver on your knife it dates to sometime after 1974 when military specs did away with the pin punch that you see on my Ulster knife in the picture. These types of knives began production in the 1940s by military contract. Imperial was involved with the first production through a collaboration with Ulster called Kingston to make knives for the military during WWII. Curious how this knife would be useful to a pharmacist.

Both sides of the knife are engraved leaving no room for the money shot and big pharma never misses a branding opportunity. None of these Imperial 'apothecary knives' have Diflucan or Viagra on them. Aside from that they generally use much, much cheaper knives (I collect them). I was also trying to figure out why these were made. At first I thought medical corps but the army would never pay for frivolous engraving. Maybe a SFO for one of the big chains? CVS, Walgreems, etc?

In my previous post I messed up trying to get an idea of a date for your knife by using references to military knives. Your knife is a civilian spin-off of the Demo knife and some kind of SFO. Now that I'm awake I looked into the tang stamp as a way of getting an idea of the time frame when your knife was made. I'm not a huge Imperial knife guy but I came up with this list of tang stamps and dates from The Official Price Guide to Collector Knives XV. Your knife must be later than 1988, after they stopped stamping PROV. RI. on the tang. And you have some history of the pattern and how it came to be.
