Received another addition to my 72 Clone family as well as my Craftsman group. A Craftsman 9494 swell center Carpenters Whittler. It has the reddish handles with the oval Craftsman Shield without the crown stamped around the word Craftsman. According to what I can find in older Sears Catalogs, this shield was used from around 1956 up to 1962 or 63 when the shield started having the Crown around the word Craftsman. Looking at the design of the clip blade, the plain smaller nail nick, and the size of the shield, I believe this knife was made by Ulster. The blades have some of the original luster, no wobble, have great snap, but do have scratches, spots and some pitting especially on the secondary small clip blade. It did need some cleaning as it had some kind of sealant or glue on the handles, stains and some kind of residue on the blades and blade well. I gave it the usual warm mineral oil bath, flushed, washed in hot water with some dw detergent, flushed again. No.2 pencil, eraser & rubbed down the blades with X fine steel wool. I was able to use tooth picks to get the gunk out of the handle jigging. It was rubbery. This is my second 9494 with this style handles, but the first with the style shield. Here are some before and after photos. She's by no means perfect, but I think looks good and now is smooth operating with great snap.
