Camillus 72 Clones

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Finally back, and figured I would post a few I picked up over the last couple of months.

First, one I think is a little odd. It is a Imperial clone of the Camillus 72. It has bone handles, a Craftsman Shield, but has the Imperial Prov. RI USA tang stamp that was used from 1956 to 1988. The Craftsman shield is the early stamped oval without the crown. All blades are full, tight with no wobble and great snap. They seem to be full but do have some pitting and staining. The main clip blade has the hollow grind on both sides.

Imperial Craftsman Bn_b.JPG
Next, I picked up another Craftsman 9494. It has the Craftsman Stamped oval shield with the Crown. Delrin brown handles. Blades are stained with scratches but have great snap. The secondary small clip blade point needs to be re-tipped as it is a little blunted, but I am good with that.
Craftsman 9494_a.JPG
Craftsman 9494_b.JPG
I also ran across a McGrew I did not have. Yellow synthetic handles with the oval McGrew Shield. Handles are tight, but does have a tiny crack at the center pin. Blades are tight, Excellant snap on the secondary Clip & Coping blade, and main clip has good snap, but not quite at strong as the others. The only problem with this knife is it looks like someone got Main & Coping blade near a grinder. I'm going to have to rework the edge a bit but still will make a great EDC, plus this is the first McGrew I've found with the yellow synthetic handles.

Lastly, Early this month, I fished this Stanley SL6 out of the bay. So finally found one. Surprising, great snap on all blades. Does have a few light scratches on the blades, but very little use.

Thanks JP. Pricewise, probably about like anywhere else. Varies from trade day, to antique shop, to flea market. On average some I got a good deal, some about average. The only one that was kind of high priced was the Ole Smokey, which I think I got for $65. The bone handle Craftsman I think was a steal for $30, which was after also buying another Craftsman for $15 which was one of the old black handle ACA series. Never was really crazy about them but was in good shape and thought would sweeten the nagotiations a bit.

Finally catching up!! These are three more 72 Clones I picked up back in January. First, another Remington R14 with the black stagged composite handles, has the oval shield with Script Remington Stamp, and Remington USA tang stamp on the clip blade. I got it from Old School knife Works on line for $35.99. Was still in the clear cellophane wrap. Like new, excellant snap. All I did was wipe it down and oil the joints. This is my second R14 with black handles.

Picked up this Schrade 863 from a pawnshop. It had some good snap on the blades, no wobble, handles were in good shape, but did need a good cleaning so I took a chance on it at $30. After the usual warm mineral oil sauna and cleaning, It has great snap on all blades and very smooth with no wobble. Blades did have some pitting as they were crusty. but I'm satisfied with it.

Lastly, Picked this Ulster 63 of the bay. Got it through a best offer. It also needed some cleaning, and a message from the seller said all blades had good snap. Also did the hot oil bath on it. Excellent snap on the coping blade and secondary clip blade. The main clip blade had a little less than the others, but still a very good snap. But it had a ton of compacted lint and fibers in the blade wells. Strong smell 3 in 1 oil. But for a total of $27.33 I feel good about it.

O.k. Just now catching up reading through this thread since I've Been Back.
New_Windsor_NY wrote: Sat Dec 04, 2021 3:00 am This pocket knife arrived very recently and became the latest to join this topic or thread and my CAMILLUS "72" variation/wannabe/clone collection. It is an UNBRANDED, 3 blades, swelled center, 3 5/8" closed, "whittler" pocket knife. It has a "bird" shield.
Skip, I have seen the Bird Shield Fly By (pun intended) on the bay from time to time, but usually they are in really poor shape. I have to say, you lucked up on one that looks really good. Nice Find.
