Camillus B.S.A. "Ugly Duckling" Knife

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Camillus B.S.A. "Ugly Duckling" Knife

Post by New_Windsor_NY »

Obtained this Camillus B.S.A. knife recently. To say it needs work
is an understatement. I have never restored, nor have I ever attempted to
restore, anything in my life. I will try with this knife. It actually is more
damaged cosmetically than physically. All the metal is there. I am going to
leave the handles the way they are. There is a story about this knife somewhere.
The bolsters might shine up. If not, they are just discolored, not damaged.
Anyway, here are the before pictures. Will post the "after" pictures when done.

Should be a fun project. It looks to me as if it has been lost somewhere out in the open and found some time later.

It almost looks like it sat in some sort of fluid (shield side down)
which bleached the handle and "corroded" the metal. But not deep
enough to cover the other handle. ::shrug::

It may have been in the bottom of a tackle or tool box that had a little bit of water in the bottom. I found one like that a while back and that was the only thing that I could explain it to.

The metal parts are "coated" with some kind of corrosion.
It isn't rust in the traditional meaning, it's black and it has
evenly coated the blades and the springs. The bolsters are
covered in something else. They look like they might clean
up nice.

Here are the "AFTER" pictures. For my 1st, semi-serious attempt at restoring anything, I
think it came out pretty good. Actually, it was more of a good cleaning. It looks a heck of
alot better than when I got it. Contrary to how they look, the bolsters are nice and shiny.
All 3 blades have good snap, none have any wobble. I didn't do anything with the handles,
except clean the shield and the pins. :D

N W NY, breathed new life into the little fellow. As Doc said, put it in your pocket and find out what a friend it will be. I bet it will return the favor. ::tu::
