Kent Celluloid

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

That is a nice one! I have a couple of Kent jack knives. The ones I have had celluloid handles that were broken or cracked, and I rehandled them with rosewood or coca bola. I believe the bolster style you refer to is called a "tip" bolster. Mine all have tip bolsters on both ends of the handle material.

I'm not sure the handles on this knife are celluloid. I've always referred to the old Kent and Imperials with similar handles as linoleum. I've never seen one outgas like celluloid. Nice old knife!
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Hey Dan:

This is off the subject but your post jogged my memory. Wasn't "Woolworth's" also called "Woolco" at one point? I seem to remember "Woolworth's & Woolco" in Southern California back in the day. ::shrug:: I also remember JJ Newberry & Buffums".

Woolworths were five and dimes with a dinner. Woolco were bigger department stores like KMart.

Thanks Wayne.
I am not 100 % sure if it is celluloid. I questioned myself prior to posting. There is absolutely no shrinkage at the bolsters or visual out-gassing that we see in many of our celluloids. Even the liners are unaffected.

Hello Mike.
Not off the subject at all. Perhaps my Kent Jack Knife was sold at the below posted Woolworth's Dept. Store.
Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 by the F.W. Woolworth Company.
Different stores but financially one company.
When we moved to Ca. in 1961 I remember "White Front & Zodys" stores.

I remember my Grandmother taking me to the Woolworth's Dept. Store on Main St. in Richmond Indiana in the late 50s and early 60s and sitting at the counter with a Cheeseburger and Chocolate Shake. Good times ::nod::

There is still an actual Woolworth's located in Bakersfield Ca.
The below three pictures are from the current Woolworth's in Bakersfield.
It is only a Diner and no retail. It has a antique store connected and is right on target to the old Woolworth's Dinners. Santa Clause even comes for the Children around Christmas. The hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM only.
I live about an hours drive South off the Grapevine.

When I was a kid we had a store called Kresge’s in downtown Mt. Clemens that had a small diner inside. It was the first place I ever had french fries at (krinkle cut) and I believe at the time they were 25 cents. Unfortunately I’ve been addicted to French fries ever since!

Pictures of the two Kent jacks that were originally celluloid. I rehandeld them both with rosewood. The smaller one is the smallest knife I own at 2 3/16". Both have tip bolsters.

Here's a couple more of my old Kent N.Y. City folders. Surprisingly, the original bails are still intact. ::groove::
I enjoy observing all "End of Day" handled knives. I seldom see newer releases of End of Day handled knives, when I do, they just do not contain the same "depth" of color razzle dazzle.
