...that doesn't look like the one I'm asking about-the second one from the right in the top row has very light-colored handles and an earlier shield and appears to be unmarked on the tang..... ::shrug:: ..........

Sorry about that Tommy. You are talking about the one in the first picture. That is a four line Sword Brand with those pre-delrin composite handles made to look like stag. It also looks like a first gen but doesn't have the long pull matchstrike but both sides of the blade are saber ground. It also has milled liners. Feel free to Identify that Pattern for me. :D

You are correct Greg. Made by Camillus for Sears only yours is based on the #80 which was the Deluxe and looks to have bone handles.

Mine is based on the #72 and has those funky handles that's very brittle and (I think) made of a milk product. Don't hold me to the handle part. My handles are cracked.

Tommy got all excited because the shield made him think it was a split spring whittler. :D

So Jerryd, set me straight on this if you can. Did Camillus only make the 80 in delrin for their brand but would make it in bone for Sears?

Tommy "who knows" seems to be the answer to a lot of what Camillus did. :D

David, Wade , thanks! That all happened so quickly and I'm blaming Tommy and Jerryd for it. ::super_happy::

David, you're doing really well. Some of those it took me a month of Sundays to snag.

Thank you Jerry. I've been trying to snag a few here and there. I have a couple more in the mail. Won another first gen last night.

Don't tell Greg that. He'll be hanging out by your mailbox.
Be sure and post them when they come.

Very nice David! ::tu:: That bone handle with no blade etch has a very pleasing brownish tint to it. Most of the ones I have seen are jet black. I like that one. ::nod::

I watched that one go Jerryd. I made an early bid but figured I probably had enough. :D

Well, since I've been reading AAPK a while, I figured I needed a #72. I'd never had one & it sounded like I was missing out on a good thing.

I reckon I was. Here's what I got & I like it, of course.

The bolsters have some tarnish or etching on one side that shows on the shot of the coping blade. I believe it will polish out easily & I can't see it without my glasses, anyway.

Oh my! When you start, you start big. That's a good'un. After Camillus stopped putting bone handles on the #72s, sometime around the mid-50s to early '60s, they only made three more with bone handles that I know of. They made one for SMKW that had "Ole Smoky" etched on the main blade. One that had ducks on the water deep etched on the main blade, maybe made for the National Wildlife Federation but not marked as such and a plain one (yours) with the football shield. All really good black bone. Yours is harder to find.

Congratulations.

Thanks, to ya'll because you're the ones I learned what I think I know about the #72 , & clones, when I did my research. It's what I do when I get a new knife & I hope someday to do my research before I buy the knife instead of after I've bought it. But my research tells me that I did get lucky with this one. I'd have never had a clue if I'd not been following some of you.
