camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

By no means a beauty queen, but another good addition for my 72 carry lot. I picked this one up in a local Collectible Consignment shop last week. It did have some rust on it, bolsters had black stains and needed cleaning inside. So I had to do some cleaning. It is a 72 Carpenters Whittler with the Long Line Italic Camillus tang stamp, so puts it in the Late 70's to late 80's production range. This is actually only the second Italic tang stamp 72 I have found. Good news is the blades are full, have great snap, and handles are tight, no cracks but do have some fading. Of course has pitting from the rust on the blades, but will give it pocket time.

The Italic tang stamp versions can not be considered rare but still they don't pop up all that often. Great snag Smitty.

Appreciate it guys. I really like the 72 pattern and their clones. To me, it is just as satisfying to find one that needs some TLC, and making it a good functional EDC again, just as much as finding that older one that is pristine. I enjoy them.

I added this one to my Camillus 72 family yesterday. Lucked up on this one for a BIN price of $22.00 on the bay. A Short Line tang stamp, It has the black composite handles which did not come with a shield, and does have some slight shrinkage. The Blades are full, no wobble, have great snap and show little use. They do have some scratches and spiders. The bolsters have some scratches and dings, and does have a drop ding on the pile side front edge. It did have some old oil film, inside blade wells were a little gunky buy no rust, and bolsters were dull. I did the typical warm mineral oil soak last night, brushed the handles with a toothbrush while soaking and flushed it out with WD-40, then re-oiled the joints. I am very happy with it. I did hand polish the blades and bolsters with some case paste. Here are the before and after photos.
