Re: Let's See Your Camco Knives!
I have lots of old Camco knives, never really paid much attention to them
Here is one of the more interesting ones. It is a Dick Tracy & Junior detective knife. It has a whistle, magnifier & a nice clip blade. The handles will glow in the dark, and these have shrunk away from the front pins like every other one of these I have ever seen
It still has the original lanyard with the attached paper tag, obviously no kid ever carried this one.

Scott, that is nice (been eying it but the budget..... ) Anyway - it looks like it might be one of those models with a split/double spring? If it is, that is a nice find.

My first Camco barlow bought through AAPK.

It's probably Delrin or an earlier composite. The Camillus brand was not introduced until 1948. I don't think Bakelite was used in knife handles much after the beginning of World War II. I could be wrong on that but based on my observations I think that's correct.
You might test it to see if it smells or tastes like Bakelite.
Here's a website that gives various test for Bakelite.
You can test for Bakelite without damaging the material.

When was the CAMCO line discontinued? Did it last until Camillus closed shop?

TJ, I don't know that the Camco line was ever discontinued, prior to the closing of Camillus in 2007.tjmurphy wrote:When was the CAMCO line discontinued? Did it last until Camillus closed shop?
I will have to ask Tom Williams, but as far as I know the Camco brand was manufactured to the very end.

Thanks Dale. It was just a question of curiousity.

You're right, Orvet. The Camco was made around the 60s (?) at a guess and I can't work up any smell.orvet wrote: It's probably Delrin or an earlier composite. Re: Let's See Your Camco Knives!
Did anybody else see this pretty little Camco go on ebay this evening? Or better yet, buy it? I bid but it ran away from me. I have never seen one of these in a yellow handle before.
Re: Let's See Your Camco Knives!
I did and I really like that knife. I should have bid, it went for $23.16. Those French Ivory handles really make that knife POP!!

Re: Let's See Your Camco Knives!
That is an oldie top have celluloid handles! Probably from the 1950s or 1960s.
I didn’t see it either, or I would probably would have thrown a bid on there too.

Re: Let's See Your Camco Knives!
Speaking of Camco…… and Bakelite……. (back up this page a few posts)…..
I will have to revise what I said about the Bakelite probably not being on Camco knives.
It seems I have a CamcoTL-29 with Bakelite handles. It tested positive for Bakelite on 3 out of 3 tests (surface magnification, rubbing & Simichrome), so I think it is Bakelite.
I don’t know the date it was made, but I would think the 1950 or the 1960 at the latest.
Does anyone have any ideas?
But as regards Paul's Barlow; he thought might be Bakelite….. Has anyone ever seen a Bakelite product that didn’t have a smooth surface? I have never seen Bakelite sawcut like those handles. I am inclined to think the Barlow is not Bakelite due to the finish on it, but by evidence of the TL-29, they did make some knives with the Bakelite handles.

I guess I am a lot older because when I was about 5 years old we were visiting my Great Grandmother, and I got bored, so she went to her purse, got her penknife and took me outside to the flowerbed and she taught me how to play mumbly peg. It was a much better world in those days.

Re: Let's See Your Camco Knives!
Sad, isn't it? I can remember when we could walk down the street with a pellet gun over the shoulder and shoot pigeons off the power lines and no-one thought anything funny about it. And, just to keep it on topic, we all carried pocket knives to school - it wasn't only not quite legal, it was expected of a boy to carry one - in fact, I can remember several occasions where prizes given by the school for academic, sporting and other achievement were in the form of pocket knives! It was a much better world in those days.
I am glad to say that all three my kids, including the two girls, were very chuffed to receive pocket knives made by dad as Christmas presents - although I think the pink G10 scales I put on the girl's must have had something to do with it...
