Green Wing Utility

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Green Wing Utility

Post by kootenay joe »

Here is a 3 3/8", three blade Utility knife with 2 liner locks and a bail. Master blade is marked "Camillus(long line over & under)/New York/U.S.A." with 2 etches: "Ducks Unlimited" and "Green Wing". The cap lifter/screwdriver & awl have a liner lock.
It does not look like Camillus level work. The springs & liners are smooth but not flush, similar to some Colonials i have owned.
It actually is a 'neat' knife. Liner locks are a good safety feature.
Do you think Camillus contracted out this knife ? to which manufacturer ?
And was "Green Wing" a special project of D.U. ? If so do you know when, so as to date this little Prince of a knife. You can tell that i like it.
thanks, kj

I am by no means a Camillus expert. I am going to say that the knife
is from between 1999-2007. Below is the "custom order" options from
a later Camillus catalog. I'm guessing that they could provide other
options not listed in the catalog, i.e. knife patterns, sheaths, belt loops,
etc. The exact date of the catalog is unknown to me. ::shrug::

This knife was made using the pattern of a Cub Scout Knife #BSA883 (BSA No. 1883), which was a cheap version of a Cub Scout Knife #BSA885 (BSA No. 1885).

Camillus also made a BSA Utility Knife #BSA045 (BSA No. 1045), which was a cheap version of the standart BSA Camp knife #BSA008 (BSA No. 1996), and I had a correspondence with Phil Gibbs 3 years ago about this knife :) .
I: "... And I not liked the red Imperial BSA knife. Poor build quality. Is this really Camillus made? Maybe it repaired knife?"
Phil: "Not likely a repaired Imperial. The BSA liked an obscene margin on their knives. They paid as little as possible for them. Even the good ones were so-so!"

By the way, Camillus also made another Ducks Unlimited Green Wing knife (pattern #5818).

Yes, great info. Thank you New Windsor & Vit_123.
The bargain that BSA & likely DU wanted explains why Green Wing is not finished up to the usual Camillus standard.
I should have remember the 3 blade BSA knife which is essentially the same knife.
Great Help ! is much appreciated.
