A Collection of #10 Queen Heavy Jacks

The Queen Cutlery Company manufactured knives in Titusville Pennsylvania for 96 years. The company opened its only factory there in 1919 and commenced to make some of the best US crafted cutlery you will find. Unfortunately, the Titusville manufacturing plant closed down in 2018.

A Collection of #10 Queen Heavy Jacks

Post by bdev »

I've been meaning to post a pic of my #10 collection and finally got around to it.
Here they are. As you can tell, I really like the #10 jack. Delrin, Winterbottom Bone, Black Composite and Rogers Bone.

In the center is a #18 (spear main blade) and a #40 Electrician's.

Nice group! Very impressive! I have what I think is a #10 heavy jack, but there are no markings on the tang...it's hard to tell in the pic, but it looks like most of yours have tang stamping of some sort. What is your expert opinion on this one?

Hi Mike,
I'm far from an expert but I can tell you what you have. It is a #10 Heavy Jack wearing Rogers Bone. Queen did not stamp their tangs from around 1961-71 but instead, etched their blades. It looks as if yours is worn off. I would guess yours was made in the early 60's. Queen went to mostly Delrin just before the 70's.

Thanks for the info, I will make a note of it ::tu:: It is certainly not as pristine as some of the examples in your collection, but is still solid and snappy.

I checked Queen's catalogs going back to 1947 and found this info about handle materials for the #10.
Queen's catalogs 1947 through 1950 list "Bone Stag" which is Rogers Bone.
Staring in 1952 through 1970, they are now showing "Frontier Bone Stag" which is Winterbottom Bone.
In 1972, they start listing their handle material as "Queen Stag" which I believe is Delrin.

Queen still used Rogers bone until around 1962. They just didn't list it in their catalog. Rogers stopped shipping bone in 1962.
Delrin was provided by the Crown Plastics Company starting around 1967.
Queen also still used Winterbottom Bone but less of it.

Most of this info is from David Krauss' book American Pocketknives - A History of Schatt & Morgan and Queen Cutlery. Great Book.

Outstanding collection bdev, each and every one of those knives looks great. That pattern wasn't on my radar before seeing this but it most certainly is now. Wouldn't mind a few of those myself.

Those are some awful fine looking knives. I'm gonna have to add one of them to the HOK pile some of these days. What is the closed length on those?

Something I just noticed about the script "Queen City" tang stamp on some of my #10's. I always thought there were just two size script stamps made. A small and large. It seems there's also a mid sized one. Check out the pic (middle knife). What does it mean? Absolutely nothing but tang stamps are neat and fun to research.
BTW.....If any of you have a #10 with the large tang stamp, could you please post what type liners it has? I have three with the large stamp and all have steel liners.

Thanks......Bruno

Thanks. I also have one small script with steel liners. All my other small scripts (I have 5) have brass.
I'm trying to determine if there were any large script made with brass liners.
