Schatt tang stamps? Help dating....

The Queen Cutlery Company manufactured knives in Titusville Pennsylvania for 96 years. The company opened its only factory there in 1919 and commenced to make some of the best US crafted cutlery you will find. Unfortunately, the Titusville manufacturing plant closed down in 2018.

Schatt tang stamps? Help dating....

Post by biglmbass »

Hello. I recently received an EZ open S&M teardrop jack. Both blades are stamped exactly like shown at the top left of the attached pic, but on my knife NEW YORK is all caps. Is this a substantial difference, or no? I can upload a pic of the actual knife later if it helps. Any & all info is appreciated.

I'm going to take a guess and say that it's a transitional stamping between the first "New York", and second "NEW YORK". Either way, the knife was probably made prior to 1902. Nailing down an exact year might be hard unless you get the opinion of an expert. David Krauss wrote a book on the history of Queen and Schatt & Morgan in 2002. I have it on order and should be receiving it soon. If I find any info that can help, I'll post it.

I just received Krauss' book and the tang stamp on your knife is pictured in it (picture courtesy of David Clark). Krauss says it is a rare stamping from when S&M was located in Gowanda from 1897-1902. No specific year was mentioned.
