USA Boker new scales

Post by Landersknives »

I had this USA Boker sitting waiting for some new scales. It had the black plastic ones and they had shrunk plus the main blade had no snap so I took it apart and fixed the main blade and went ahead and re-scaled it. Hope you like it. Oh sorry I thought I had taken before pictures but I can’t find them now.

Ed, that's a fine job you did. Looks very nice. It's like new knife all over again. Now just out of curiosity, what was the method for attending to the non-existent snap on the main blade? For me, weak or no snap at all irritates the heck out of me. :x

Mike usually when you have weak or no snap you have one or two issues going on....sometimes maybe even both going on at the same time. You either have a tang that is wore down and has an “ear” on it.
Bad tang with the “ear”

Here is a pic with a bad and good tang for comparison
A bad tang with the “ear” and a good tang

or the spring has been wore down with a groove

This last picture is a good spring with the bad spring

with either or both of these you have to weld the spring to fill in the groove or weld the tang to build it back up. The tang has to be a certain size to push the back spring and make it work properly. A weak spring can cause the slow/weak snap as can a lot of trash and debris that needs to be cleaned out. Most of the time on older knives it is a bad tang or spring or both. I hope I answered your question Mike. Thanks my friend, Ed

Yes it does, and the photos you provided add an excellent visual reference. I'm sure that takes a bit of work, but it would certainly bring the life back on an old, worn out knife. Thank you Sir. ::tu:: And well done Ed. ::nod::

Good job Ed. That looks BETTER than new!
Did you add the cutout in the scale to make it an "ez opener"?
