The Awesome Looks of the Desert Ironwood Whaler

Post by boykinlp »

I really enjoy looking at pictures of the new GEC Whaler in Desert Ironwood. I have noticed that the Desert Ironwood ones have many different looks. I have seen light wood with dark streaks, wood that was so dark that it was difficult to see any grain, and even some that have a burl like pattern in the grain. The grain pattern in this type of wood apparently has many differences. Why don't we start a thread were we show the many different looks and tell us what you think? Here is mine:

Can't help with the picture alignment but I will have to say both knives shown have beautiful grain structure. Desert Ironwood is good stuff. ::tu::

Just beautiful knives, fellows. I would not have guessed that all three of those are the same wood.

I tried desperately to post one of your own photos to show you how to re-align your pictures but thanks to the new "upgrade" from Microsoft, every time I try to draw on your photo it litereally disappears.

So, when you click on one of your own pictures, there should be a black box that surrounds that photo. On the black box at the top there should be an icon you can click on that looks like a "dot" with a 3/4 circle around it with an arrow on one end.

If you click on that icon it should "rotate" your photo 25 degrees. Keep clicking on that icon until your photo is rotated to the desired position. Also, if you "right click" on any photo, a list of commands will show up. One will say: "Rotate Right", and another will say: "Rotate Left". Click on one of those 2 commands and it should rotate your photo 25 degrees either way. Keep doing that until your picture ends up in the desired position.

If you still need help send me a PM and I'll take a picture of what it looks like. And now I can see you saying to yourself: "why didn't you just do that in the first place"? Well, because the "upgrade" I just downloaded messed that up too and I can't upload photos now.

Until I can figure out how to get everything back to normal, written instructions will have to do. Hope this helps.

Here is a comparison of blade size & handle size between two 46 pattern, a single blade #45 and a stag #36.
The 45 & 46 use the same frame which is swell centered & tapered, making for unequal end size. The #45 has master blade at the small end while the #46 has master blade at the large end.
The ivory 46 is a Northfield while the 2018 Desert Ironwood 46 is a Tidioute, yet both blades are identical in size and swaging and handles have the same 'trim' level. Usually the Northfield would have more detail than a Tidioute like threaded and/or pinched bolsters so it is odd that both the Northfield & Tidioute are the same.
On this #45 from 2016 Rendezvous, the blade is not as deep, spine to edge as the #46 Whaler blade. As this is a Rendezvous knife i don't know if this is the standard #45 master blade. Perhaps someone with a 45 can comment.
The 36 is a slightly smaller Sunfish and is not too big to carry. I like it very much.

KJ that ivory # 46 is like the holy grail of 46’s. Do you have more pictures of it? How many of those did they make?

I think that is the 2011 462211 with interior elephant ivory. If so, it is 1 of only 5.

Which one of these do you think looks best, the burled or the streaked pattern?

Both are pretty nice, but I'd personally lean towards the burled one.

Both are elegant. I would be happy with either once the other was gone. Regardless of which you choose you will really like best after you sell the other. Within a day or 2 you won't worry about whether or not you made the right decision.
