That is high for a #48 pattern. For some reason it is not a popular pattern. But how can a Trapper not be popular among collectors of Traditional pattern knives ? People do seem to like the "Smooth White Bone" handles. If you use one you will find that the handle shows any dirt on it whereas a jigged bone handle would still look clean.

To be more specific: the GEC knife selling business. I do not know of any other modern knives that regularly sell for way above original price.

$447.00 for this Northwoods Signal Jack. That's a lot, to be sure, but I really expected this one to sell for more.

I’ve recently watched with satisfaction as several GEC auctions quietly ended with no bids. I thought maybe knife buyers were finally growing tired of the exorbitant prices sellers we’re trying to wrench out of their knives. Guess I was wrong...

And then there’s this guy! Not only is the knife heavily used, but he’s bastardized it! Is he for real??

He’s got zero transactions on eBay, this is his very first listing. Part of me thinks this is a prank.

Note this in the description:

If you know what they are and want it bad enough you’ll pay what I’m asking because I truly don’t even want to part with it.

I know what this is--an expensive knife with ugly modifications and no discerning GEC collector would even bother looking at a knife that has not only been someone's EDC for years, but was heavily modified. You'd have to pay me $500 to take it off your hands. Knives with these types of modifications are what sell as "parts or repair lots" of 5-10 knives for $50 or less. I know, as I have a Camillus USN EO someone similarly bastardized (spear into clip) that came to me that way--a lot of 5 for $25.

We have members here who turn inexpensive knives into works of art. We have a guy here who turned an expensive knife into a piece of junk. Presumably this guy saw the crazy GEC prices and thought he could offload this thing. Given his remarks and the stupid price, eBay should pull the listing.

Why would someone make such a modification? When I see the file work on the pen blade, and the (poorly) modified spear, methinks he tried to make a whittling knife. I would say, with these modifications, it may be worth a tenth of his insane asking price, but that's a stretch.

Why "settle" for a lousy $800 when you could possibly get $1,000? The second highest bidder of this 2014 Washington Jack just might still want one badly enough to pay through the nose like the winner did.

The amount this Washington Jack sold for is mind-boggling :? Perhaps the winning bidder was more caught up in winning the auction than in buying a knife for a semi-reasonable price (a very attractive knife, to be sure, but even so...). Who knows what people are thinking when they (over)pay this much for a knife? ::shrug:: Not me, that's for sure.

So, the final buzzer has sounded, the checkered flag has waved and the results are in: an astonishing, unbelievable
$1,025 (plus $6.95 shipping).

There are plenty of people who have made huge amounts of money thanks to the internet and luck. To such people spending $1,000 is as easy as it is for me to spend $10, not much thought required.
It might have a ripple effect and result in higher prices for all GEC's on the secondary market ?
I have a GEC made Northwoods Norfolk Whittler with elephant ivory handles that i value at $1500 but it is NSF.
