Here's what I would imagine to be an incredible afternoon if I was a dreamer and wishing for some mythical perfect day. How about take the afternoon off on a rare kind of fabulous day around Puget Sound. Have lunch with the family. Ride the motorcycle a few miles to a quaint little town, catch a ferry boat to the other side of the Sound where you rarely go. Water is beautiful, scenery great, boats out, guys Salmon fishing right and left, Olympic Mountains ahead, Volcano mountains Rainier and Baker to the side, fall colors. 20 min ferry to Kingston where you go to the favorite watering hole of a veteran knife enthusiast, dealer, GEC collector and knife encyclopedia, one famous in certain circles. Meet at the Filling Station bar and grill. You sit in pleasant surroundings, have a few drinks or something to eat with a famous knife guy who then proceeds to pull out a table cloth and rags and white gloves, cases and tubes, to show you some of his private stash pieces and then he says he has too many knives and needs to get rid of some inventory. Then you try to keep yourself from grinning too big like an idiot, and giggling like a little kid in a candy store, trying hard not to come across too eager and simultaneously drool all over his gems. When faced with such choices the mind is boggled, the shock and gravity of it, the considering hard and fast, the decisions final. There's no second chance at a time like that. Once in a lifetime. And one in a million, or billion. The knives and the man. Not your average knife. One of a kind stag, and customization. All this made so rare by one of the friendliest, nicest, down to earth, one-of-the-boys kind of guys who seems like a friend to every man especially anyone who likes knives. That was too good to be true and a pipe dream I didn't even dare dream of until yesterday when it happened, met Gunstock Jack in his own haunts out on the Peninsula. Rain forest. Primeval feel, still feels like wilderness and separated from the mainland. Like a dream. Most people would not even get it, much less appreciate it, but I share only because I love to read stories like this and can't believe I'm relaying one, but hoped it was interesting to someone else besides me. Blown away. Seems like a dream now. Not really real like every day life. Weird. And all brought to you by the graciousness and generosity and friendship of Gunstock Jack who I met at the Oregon knife show years ago. And it goes back further 6-7 years maybe to Qtcut5 who got me into chasing knives and buying and selling and going to knife shows and shops and places where you get blades. Jack and Q are the kind of gems who were passing on the love, not gouging out the profits, letting you get stuff you couldn't get elsewhere, totally unavailable and much less than you would have to give up even if they were out there somewhere else, which they weren't. Just sharing for interested parties and passing on the good vibes of fellow blade brothers and sisters and great people out there in the knife world. My friends and family don't get it, but I knew some of you here would. Unbelievable. Thanks, thanks, thanks Q and Jack. Made some memory burn today. I'll never forget, never be able to give thanks enough. ::not_worthy::

Q has made available to me some of my most treasured and personally-meaningful knives without any regard for profit.

Jack made it possible for me to lock in my first (and so far only) Ancient TC Barlow at dead retail after the much-hated "lolly scramble" had made almost all of the reservations disappear.

Both men are gems and amazing assets to the AAPK community.

Hear hear!

My kind of reading Iman. I enjoyed conjuring up the feeling of a motorcycle ride in the clean crisp Fall air of the Pacific Northwest wilderness. Then the boat ride to what i perceive to be a small town or village and meeting a sincere and welcoming knife guy completes the 'perfect outing'.
I did not know that Barry is an old time well respected knife collector. I only know Barry as the friendly knife dealer who has given me some very good deals for very special knives like my ivory Whaler.

Well that's my term, a collector to me in that he has over the years accumulated some great stuff having had all the dealer knives pass through his hands and dealing with knife people all the time and Evan Esnyx. Then you know exactly what I mean about him letting you get a hold of knives you would never see and at very reasonable, non-gouging prices for fellow knife lovers and guys like us who would never get the chance otherwise. Sounds like you've seen what I mean, he's about the coolest knife guy I've ever met in person in my little experience. I got to know him and Derrick Bohn through years of going to the OKCA knife shows in Eugene OR, and they both treated me like old friends at first. Both great and RIP Derrick B. Miss him. Loved his designs and same with Barry and Charlie C. My favorite GEC's are all their designs and SFOs. Glad you liked the reading too, that really tickles me, appreciate the comment and it's the least I could do to share a story like that with fellow blade brothers and sisters who would appreciate it. Very unique experience for me anyway. Rare day. Thanks again all who commented.

We'll do it again Iman!

Most the guys I know just get a glazed look in their eyes and back away slowly when I start talking about knives!! ::paranoid:: When I ask them what they carry, they pull out some ugly thing they picked up at the gas/groc that might cut cold butter. I don't get it. ::shrug::

I'll be there. Looking forward to it. I know what you mean. Growing up I did the same, 10 dollar POS knives, figured if I lost them no big deal. Then a decade or so ago Q woke me up to the idea of carrying cool knives, beautiful knives, quality built knives, works of art knives. I'm more careful with them now and don't lose them as much. Well it takes some of us longer to see the light. Learned from the pros like you guys. Thanks again

My first GEC purchases and so far my only ones to date .gotta save up for a while since I bought all three at the same time from Collector knives .Thanks Mike! I believe the #44-gunstock is a SFO in Cocobolo with satin blades. Think I got the last one be had in that blade option. The #48 Improved trapper in sweet pickle green bone is also fantastic. The #35 Calf Pen is robust and impressive the OD green micarta handles have wonderful depth of grain that just doesn't show up on camera...I intend to pick up another one soon..great practical edc...purchased these at the end of August 2018....may try to pick up another gunstock Jack in a different handle..really great knife..highly recommend them .

Just Dave....I hear you .... Since that purchase I have been saving up towards aquiring another either cocobolo or jugged bone....stag would be great but hard to find and pricey when you do...a bunch of other GEC stuff I would like, but have to stick to my budget...difficult since I just recently retired and am having to adjust to living on a fixed income ..much less discretionary dollars to use..but it's gonna be strictly GEC and Case when I can afford them. Been drooling over a Case Tribal lock in Blue Giraffe bone or smooth antique bone.....ahh well budget is good training for impulse control .

Though I haven't seen an Appy 56 up close, I suspect that what you'll get is going to be a natural bone handle with a little bit of brown dye absorbed, kinda like some of the "empty Appy" Cases of the early 80s (some with fabulously mismatched handles where one is extremely dark and one is almost purely undyed bone). Maybe not as "golden" in hue as the pic might depict...

I guess the only way you'll know is when you see it. I dig what I'm seeing from the photos but I've always been a fan of the uneven, hard-to-predict Appy handles and I think GEC does a great job with them.

I watched that very knife sell. It didn't look like yellow at all on my screen, it was white mostly with tan and brown splotches. Maybe my computer is showing bogus color. Wouldn't be the first time.

I think this bright yellow goes well with the handle curves of this pattern which is why i bid. This is where ebay & paypal can be helpful. If i find the color substantially different from this picture, i will return it for refund and ebay or paypal will back me if necessary. This seller's FB shows he has sold a number of GEC's that were enthusiastically received. Hence i doubt altering color is his norm.
It will be at least a week before i can get to USA P.O. to pick it up but i will post my own pictures here soon after i get it.

KJ Whenever I see a yellow bolster I know the pic was taken inside...and the "warmth" of the pic should be adjusted down. The photo editor that comes with Windows 10 does a good job for that particular problem. Here's what your pic looks like with some of the warmth taken out. The bone still has a yellowish cast to it....It'll be interesting to see what you get

Here are some photos of my pair, taken inside as well. They aren't what I would call yellow at all, but it's a timeless and classic pattern with interesting handles. I'll be surprised if you don't love it kj.

dweb, are you saying that artificial light gives a yellow color ? There are lights with 'neutral' spectrum. I think i am not understanding what you are saying. Can you explain a bit more ?
thanks, kj

I don't think I'm the one to explain this...When I use my camera on fully automatic indoors...no flash of course I end up with a picture like this where the bolsters and blade look yellow...the photo is too warm
BEN-1.jpg
When I use the photo editor to reduce the warmth I get this
BEN-1 (2).jpg
If I reduce it too much I get the blue tinge...the photo is too cool
BEN-1 (3).jpg
None of these is as good as an outdoor pic but then time and weather don't always cooperate. If I set my camera to manual adjustments I can set the white balance for the type of light I'm shooting under and get a better picture to begin with. I guess it all depends on what your camera is capable of and how capable you are at using it. Anyone who thinks the camera doesn't lie has never looked at wedding photos...the photographer's job is to make the plain look pretty and the pretty to look gorgeous.

Oh and by the way...my 2 new GEC rendezvous knives
