WOW!

Those mammoth fish are beeeeeeeeautiful!

Prototyes and Ken Daniels signed the c.o.a.s, too.

I think I like the exterior ivory example the best.

Thanks, Monk!

Monk:

We sure did have fun back then when we were waiting for and buying every new release that GEC made. And I still have every knife that I bought back in those days. I picked up some really fine GEC stag during that time. Plus a lot of nice Case stag.
Yep, I'm still residing in Michigan's great north woods.
I got slowed down by some health issues but have recovered as best I can hope for.
I started buying a few knives about 3 months ago , some GECs as well as from other
knife makers. I kinda got hooked on mammoth ivory and have been
accumulating Tuna Valley examples of mammoth.
Btw, I have info from a solid source that "the guy" who bought
that pair of GEC mammoth-handled sunfish back in 2011 for $1995.00.
still owns them.
I'm happy to know that you are well.
Stay in touch(at least once every 5 years) ::ds::

The #46 with mammoth in O.P. are from 2009. Here is an ivory Whaler from 2011, shown next to a stag #36. I think there are 4 ivory ones from 2011.

Well I suspect that one would fetch a pretty penny today! Beautiful Roland is that the E word?

Yes, elephant ivory. A well known knife collector sold an elephant tusk to GEC and this became the ivory handles for most (all ?) of the GEC made ivory handled knives. Every single one i have seen is absolutely top quality ivory.
I do not make much of a differentiation between mammoth & elephant ivory. With magnification there is a minor difference in structure pattern but they are otherwise the same. Mammoth that has not taken on a stain (often very colorful) looks just like elephant ivory because it is just like elephant ivory.
Mammoth ivory is not fossilized, (i.e. replaced by minerals and become a rock), it has been preserved in the ground for 10,000 or more years. I think some as long as 40,000 !

Roland I thought of you when I saw this knife, but it will take some doing to get it away from me. :D

KJ: Above are the photos of my 2 mammoth-handled sunfish knives and the story behind them as posted by my friend Big Monk in 2011. I paid $1995.00 for the pair shortly before Big Monk's above message.
Btw, I still own the knives.
