Any idea where I could pick one of these up?Dilligas wrote: ↑Mon Mar 28, 2011 9:27 pm I had a few people express some interest in these stiddy's, they are ready to ship now. They have been treated with black oxide to prevent corrosion. They are $150.00 shipped in the United States, 2 have been sold and there are 13 left in this batch. There is some oil on the stiddy in the pictures which may look like the finish is uneven. PM me for payment details.

They occasionally pop up on Ebay...but; generally are too rich for my blood. Do a search for the stiddy, on Ebay...then, "Save Search". You'll get notified, when one pops up.

Yeah, I’ve been looking for one for awhile and haven’t seen any on E-bay in the last year or two.
I’m considering buying a small section of railroad track that I can attach a small machined piece Of angle iron to (for replacing handles without disassembling the knife). Someone posted a few pictures of one they made awhile ago but I can’t remember who it was.
Stiddy’s are such a specialty item that they’re rarely available for sale.

Re: Knife stiddy's for sale
So I did a bit of internet sleuthing and I understand the thin side is used for pinning the handle material on, but the other end the thicker side what is that for? I saw one thing said about using it so the blades dont contact each other but I cant figure how that would work. One post I saw thought u used the slot to bend the blade a bit so they dont rub when 2 blades are on a knife.
Also stumbled on this pic, not sure if it's from a book or someone's own design. I think the slot is 3/16" wide on each end.
I'm guessing there are lots of variable designs. Saw a few on the net with different sizes.
Interesting regardless

Jeff,
I have made a number of those railroad tracks stiddies. I will try and remember to post a few of them, they are not too difficult to make. The difficult part is getting the top of the railroad track smoothed out. I have found they don't need to be hardened either.

This is Stiddy #9
Jeff,
I hope this gives you and some of the other fellows ideas on how to make a stiddy. The horns are made from angle iron that is been filed or sanded down to fit between the liners of a knife. In reality a person could make the horn and clamp it in a vice and use that for peening pins on the inside without taking the knife apart.
I did make one railroad track stiddy that I welded instead of bolting together. It was the first one I made and I gave it to Johnny Fain was a moderator here on AAPK until he passed away in 2009. His wife sent me the stiddy back and it's one that I still use. I don't recommend trying to weld railroad track unless you have the correct rod for it. Its composition makes it difficult to weld with standard welding rod. I'm am told that there is special rod made for welding railroad tracks that is only available to the railroads. One thing to note if you make a stiddy out of the short a piece of railroad track is you will need to drill a hole on each side to attach it to a workbench. Otherwise it it is too short to be steady enough to hammer on.

Re: Knife stiddy's for sale
stiddy #3
I didn't get good pictures of this stiddy after it was finished, these are pictures taken while it was in process. This is one stiddy I wished I had kept because it is useful both as a stiddy and as a light duty anvil.
These are rough cut views of the stiddy.
in these fuses is a little more finished but not complete.
A couple observations on making these stiddy's from railroad tracks:
– You will need a good oxy-acetylene cutting torch to be able to cut this heavy railroad track. Even the lighter gauge track is difficult to cut.
– I found it far easier to drill and tap the track that it is to weld it, and it's far neater looking.
– The most time-consuming portion of making one of these is polishing it and getting all the dings out of the top. For this I mainly relied on an angle grinder with various grades of abrasive discs starting from his courses I could find and going up. I did finish with wet or dry sandpaper and a vibrating sander like used in woodworking. I was able to find some ScotchBrite type discs made for an angle grinder that came close to putting the final shine on the stiddy. For the final shine I used an 8 inch sewn muslin wheel with black emery rouge and the final finish was with Black Magic rouge. I believe that one came from Jantz Supply.
Hopefully, this will be helpful for anyone who wishes to make their own stiddy.
Let me know if you have questions, I answer them if I can.

Re: Knife stiddy's for sale
Wade,
Check the observations at the bottom of the post for stiddy #3, I told what I used to polish them there.
I had a couple of them at The Oregon Show probably 8 years ago when a gentleman came by and started talking to me about how I polished the stiddy's. We talked about them for a few minutes and then I noticed his name tag, he was Paul Bos. So then I got to pick his brain for about 45 minutes about Buck Knives and how he does their heat treating and get such great performance out of the steel. It was a fascinating conversation.

Re: Knife stiddy's for sale
Thank you Doc.
It took me 8 - 10 hours on the smaller stiddies and twice that long on the larger ones.
As the arthritis in my hands got worse I was just not able to continue making them. There's a lot of pressure and vibration on your hands with literally hours of using an angle grinder.
I would say the ideal size for making a study is about a 6 to 8" length a railroad track to help it have good balance by itself without needing to attached to the bench. If you have a piece of larger gauge track you might need it longer yet. You kind of have to look for a balance point in relationship to be length, width, and height, if it's too short it will need to be screwed down to the bench top. Several of the ones I made were too short to be used without having them attached to the bench top. The longer stiddies are much more stable.
Most of you can probably find a 8 inch to 12 inch piece of railroad track at a second hand store or flea market for a few dollars. It's usually not real expensive, especially for the smaller pieces. You might even be able to get some at a scrap yard.
It's a lot of sweat and dirt to make one, I highly recommend a good respirator because there's going to be a lot of rusty dust coming off of that railroad track. I also recommend that you do it outside when possible to avoid making a huge mess in your shop, unless you have a great evacuation system.
With a few dollars, a little bit of sweat you can make your own stiddy. although it may not look as fancy as the ones you pay the big dollars for, it'll be unique because it's something you made and you can adapt it to other needs you may have.

Re: Knife stiddy's for sale
NOTE:
To everyone who looking at this topic in 2021 and beyond: this is a topic and the last stiddy that was sold in this topic was in 2012, Almost 10 years ago curious there are no current stiddys available through this topic.
The author of the original post is Dilligas, and he is not logged into AAPK in over two years.
I don't know of anyone who currently has any stiddys for sale.
If you are handy with your hands, and every knife mechanic should be, then you might try making your own stiddy. in the second page of this topic I have posted several examples of stiddys I have made over the last years from. Feel free to look at the pictures, use or adapt my design to a study of your own manufacturing
I hope you find the pictures interesting and informative.
