Custom 112 bareheaded

Hoyt Buck produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt and his son Al moved to San Diego and set up shop as H.H. Buck & Son in 1947. Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the infamous Model 110 Folding Hunter. The company's innovative history and attention to quality have made for many great collectible knives.

Custom 112 bareheaded

Post by kossetx »

Howdy folks, a few of you asked about this in another thread so rather than high jack that thread I'll post a new one. I like to tinker. I also like to own things with special meaning and look good.

Texas had a severe drought in 2011 and I lost thousands of trees. I salvaged what I could from them. This knifes scales came from one of those trees. It's curly eastern red cedar with a brass and buffalo horn spacers. This was my second attempt at bareheading a Buck.

Those porch rails were also a result of the drought.

Sorry for the loss of your livelihood due to the drought, but you surely made lemonade out of lemons. That is a beautiful knife, made absolutely cool by the story behind it. OH
Deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club...Robert Ruark

Thanks folks, those pics just don't do this knife justice. It's just awesome in person. Sometimes you just can't capture the beauty in pics,

I personally don't think I have seen one in red cedar before. Great looking knife.

That's awesome! I think Cedar and Cherry are generally my two favorite woods.

It's not a twin but here's the sibling. Started yesterday, finished today. It was a 110 pro. Ns, buffalo, ERC and S30v.

I don't understand why when you click the pic it turns the right way up, but it does. Sorry about the bright light. It's needed to get a decent pic out of this ipad.

Very, very nice! Along with Legend's questions I was wondering if you had stabilized the wood and when you remove the bottom bolster of those 110s does it have much change in how they feel in the hand? I've got several 110s (who doesn't?) and find them to be almost heavy feeling when using them.

Looking good.
Are you stabilizing the cedar? I have made some cedar scales in the past that were soft on the wear.

Really like the quartersewn oak.

To answer questions, no I'm too primitive to do a tutorial. Yes, the wood was home stabilized. I don't believe wood needs plasticized. I simply remove the water and replace it with a solution that slows water absorption again. I've never found cedar to be very soft. The top layer is coated with cyanoacrylate. It improves the finish and toughens it up too.

Do you remove and peen the rear bolster pins back into place or do they remain secure? I plan to modify a 500 to a barehead.

Thanks for the reply, I had thought about using a center punch. Wish me luck, I'm stretching my capabilities with this notion.
