Look what I found today! Buck 311 Trapper

Hoyt Buck produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt and his son Al moved to San Diego and set up shop as H.H. Buck & Son in 1947. Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the infamous Model 110 Folding Hunter. The company's innovative history and attention to quality have made for many great collectible knives.

Look what I found today! Buck 311 Trapper

Post by Baykeeper »

It was a good day at the local swap meet.
I have several other Bucks, both US & foreign, but today is Trapper day!!
I've been looking for a Buck 311 ever since the one I purchased back in 1971 was stolen back in the 90's. They appear sporadically, but overly priced on Feebay, so I have just kept my eye open for one locally. Today, a "gypsy" swapper showed at our local swap, (on the way to somewhere else, just stopped to make gas money along the way), & he had several knives. I took a look, and lo and behold he had a 1967-72 Buck 311 Trapper in very good condition. They guy was no dummy, and initially asked for $30, but before I left I offered him $20 and he agreed. Considering that the blades were unscratched, tight, well centered, & smooth opening with good closing snap, and the fact that the handles are worn but not THAT worn, (not even scratched or gouged), I thought a Jackson was a reasonable price. Also found a "Whale" stamped German pen knife for $2, & a Hammer Brand pen for another $2 today, so what can I do today to top that?

So here it is. I have a leather sheath waiting for it, and will add it to my EDC rotation.

Thanks, I tried not to blink when the guy accepted the offer. I think acting like I didn't want it at $30 worked on the guy...or maybe he just needed some quick money. Whatever the reason, I'm thrilled to have found it.

Nice Buck 311 - you aren't going to find another one at that price! OH

Thanks, I'm lovin' it. ::ds::
A very sleek knife compared to other trappers. I have a couple of East German leather belt sheaths made for a single small caliber ammo clip that fits it perfectly. I carried the 311 Trapper on my right hip today, my 313 Muskrat on the left in a similar sheath. The 313 is a very slim frame too, so the two knives go well together visually, (I've owned that 313 since 1971). You can tell they came out of the same factory, (Camillus)...I love 'em both!

Buck 300 series question

Post by Baykeeper »

I have a question about the Buck 300 series manufactured by Camillus, of which my 311 & 313 pictured above are examples. I saw a list of those Bucks made by Camillus somewhere here on BF, but can't seem to find it again.
Anyone have that info, or know where I can find it? I have the goofy idea of trying to collect one of each of those Camillus Bucks, I figure I already have two of them, so I've got a two-knife head start on such a quest. Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help with that.

BayKeeper,

That list is somewhere on this forum in a post about 300 series models. Your collection quest will involve about 35+ knives. Schrade was the first contractor and made five versions. Camillus then took over and made some models well into the 1990's. Buck took back the 301,303,309 and 305 in 1986 and started placing date codes on their production models. Camillus never date coded the main blade. Some special order SMKW's 300 models were made by Camillus in the 80's and 90's and are not stamped with the model number on the tang.

The list your speaking of is somewhere here in this forum where we were talking about the 300 series. Let me see if I can find it.

Your 311 and 313 come in a couple of versions. The very first ones made had brass scale rivets and then there are two different tang stamps over time, and any special blade printing and scale shield stamps. An example would be the 311 comes with Winchester stamped on the scale shield, less than a 1,000 were made. Some companies have had special orders done with the company name printed on the blade or stamped on the shield.

Thank you, you were the person I was hoping would see my post, I knew you would know if that list existed or not.
I've had one of my 313 Muskrats for decades, so that series of Bucks has always been a favorite of mine. Having lost, then now re-obtained a 311 from that era, that knife seldom leaves my side. I guess if you need a direction in your collecting, finding 35+ or so 300 series Camillus-made Bucks is a worthy objective for a collection, even if you never find them all. Thanks for the info, I knew I had seen that list somewhere.

300Bucks, after reading your post again I realize that my 311 and my 313's all have brass scale rivets, so they would be "earlier" knives. Both my 313's also have two cutouts in the handles adjacent to the nail nics on the blades, and I know that some 313's only have one of those cutouts. I've read posts that describe those with two as "earlier", and another post somewhere that describes them as "later" versions. I think if they have the brass scale rivets you describe that should mean they are the earlier versions. I guess it doesn't matter really, but it is fun to research a favorite knife isn't it?

Wow, thank you, copied and saved for future reference. It looks like you know more about Buck than Buck knows about Buck. All the work you put into that list is a benefit to the entire knife collecting community, I for one appreciate the effort.
If there is anything I can ever do for you please, just ask.

What a great resource!! I'll be going over that list for weeks, you have Bucks listed I never even knew existed. For example, I've never heard of the 311 being termed "Slimline" Trapper before, no wonder it differs so much from other trappers, (one of the reasons I like them, and of course, I will just HAVE to have all of the US-made trappers on that list). You're right about another thing too, that IS a lot of knives to collect in a single series, but now, thanks to you, I now know which are which, and what to look for.
Thanks again for going to all the trouble, knowledge is power, and you have empowered everyone who reads these posts.

300Bucks, Let me echo Baykeeper's thanks - terrific list (which I've not seen before), downloaded as a guide for my 300 series collecting. OH

Well, those are not the mother of all lists. It is a spread sheet like listing of 300s from beginning to the 1990s. But, it is in a Doc Word file. Let me figure out how to get it on here and your mind will be filled with facts. Most of these listings of facts, I inherited from Charles Tofts the first model 300 Guru out of Southern CA. He is off the "lecture' circuit now but I will do my best to share his entrusted info. Once in a while someone will find a typo but I think we are pretty accurate... 300/ch

Can you convert it to a pdf?
Not sure about Word, but on Open Office you can just click a button on the upper task bar and it will automatically convert the file to pdf. I think you can do that with Word too, but that function might be hidden in one of the endless drop down menus that Word has.

Wow again!! WOW!!

I'm not necessarily a "computer guy", but I know my way around a word processor, so I'll give it a shot.

Ok, I copied and pasted it to a word processor, then converted it exactly as written above to pdf, but for some strange reason the forum isn't allowing me to upload that 7 page pdf?? I don't think it's something wrong with the document, as I now have both a word document and a pdf of the above post saved on my laptop. I can edit it, and possibly convert it to a spreadsheet, but I can't seem to post any such document here. I find that kind of strange. Perhaps someone reading this knows why that is?
I'll contract an administrator if needed to see if we can arrange something, that document is a valuable piece of research that should be shared with the community.
Thank you for doing all this work, you should be commended for it.

Try printing it an see if that will make the columns and headers correct. That's what I couldn't get to happen here...In my WORD version the headers and columns are correct. And prints correct also..

There are some small details that may be hard to pull out if a difficult to read version is all I am giving you. Such as one model of 309s has two versions, one without a scale cutout for the pen blade and one with. Those are details that are from the cutler type production of knives by Camillus. One person produces a 1,000 knives with the cutout ground in the scale and if another cutler makes his 1,000 without grinding the notch all of sudden the collector has two versions of that model. That's why in a series of knives like the 300s a correct listing is important. And makes collecting them against say a Buck 112 folder more difficult. Its 50 or 60 versions in the pre-85 300s vs. a dozen 112s before Buck started date stamping.

My printer is on the fritz at the moment, (aren't they always?), but I'll put it on a flash drive and print it out on a friend's printer tomorrow and see what I get.
It's not unreadable at all, it just needs the line numbers bolded, and some separation between the lines from each other, some punctuation, then it will be easy to read.
I must say I have seen full-blown college class syllabi that were not so detailed and full of data as this, this is an impressive piece of work.
I'm still puzzled as to why AAPK won't accept a pdf upload, I get a message that says, "The extension pdf is not allowed", but irregardless I thank you for all that hard work, it's Rhodes scholar quality historical research.

I tried loading an Excel spreadsheet of the data, but that is not allowed.

I've been trying to do that too. Seems like the only option is to print it, then scan it, then add it as a jpg. I'm assuming that AAPK doesn't allow these kinds of file uploads for a reason, but just what that reason might be I have no idea.

Bert, this list does not have the correction you pointed out. Now I can't find where I wrote down the mistake you found...ha I do remember it was a 309 wasn't it. 300
