Funky Eyeglass Frames Out Of Teak Wood
I had a pair of really good Cebe glacier glasses. I mnaged to step on them, ruining the frames. The lenses were still like new, and I couldn't find any replacement frames so I decided to carve some. These are the first pair that I carved, so they're funny looking, but they fit and work great. I've made two pair since. Anyway, this is the first pair that I carved.

Then, I had a pair of Oakley Moons. They are small pair with round lenses. I worked on gas wells, and every day I was either four wheeling or snowmobiling to my wells. These Oakley Moons were perfect fo wearing under a full face helmet. After about 7 years, the frames broke, and again, the lenses were like new, so I carved pair number two. These were made from th same Teak board as my first pair.

The first pair are never worn in public. They do work great when driving into setting or rising sun since they only let in 6% of bright sunlight. The second pair, I gave to my Sister, and she wears thm when driving. They are more of an experiment than a fashion statement! I mainly wanted to see if it could be done by using my much-limited ability.

That's sorta like George Washington carving his own teeth...what were your tools of choice?

These were rough-cut with my Bosch Sabre Saw, an the rest were carved completely with my Schrade Walden 233. I never used sandpaper. I enjoyed shaving them to shape as opposed to sanding them. They took a long time that way, but I would just sit down at night shaving them to shape while I watched TV. My old 233 has been sharpened a LOT.

Seeing, that it was purely a pocket knife...the impressive factor just went up!

Very impressive Wally. Brilliant idea and even better execution. I like that a lot.

I hate to throw anything away and would rather repair than toss. Awesome work!
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Re: Funky Eyeglass Frames Out Of Teak Wood
Thanks Guys. The third and last pair was the best. I had a pair of Ray Ban Wayfarer lenses, (broken frames). My Brother didn't have any prescription sunglasses. I carved the frames like regular Wayfarers.
I got a pair of his prescription lenses, and made a pair with 4 lenses. I inlayed the prescription lenses, then inlayed the Wayfarer sunglass lenses in front of the prescription lenses. This made him a pair of prescription sunglasses. I didn't take pictures of them, but I'll see if he can send me a few pictures of them.

I like both pair, but the 1st pair are the winners for me !!!
They are gorgeous in that teak wood... my old Marantz 2270 has
a teak wood case on it...and glacier glasses, been decades since
I thought of them...lost a great pair of em in "The Bob"
Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana on a hike back in 1977.
Really enjoyed your work and stories, brought some back for me !!!

Thank You Stag. I would hate to lose a good pair of Glacier Glasses. There' a company, JULBO, That makes some great Glacier shades that don't cost a lot. I hav another pair of Cebe Glaciers that I bought to replace the pair that I stepped on, but I just couldn't waste a great pair of mineral lenses.
Re: Funky Eyeglass Frames Out Of Teak Wood
I will check out that outfit for the glacier glasses Wally...being out
here in Arizona,, you get a lot of sun and during these winter months,,
I am averaging 2 to 3 days a week out in the mountains Prospecting...
I looked at pics again and that 2nd pair is growing on me....
They also least for me have that "big eye" look with the darkness and
reflection of the lens like all the descriptions of Aliens..how their eyes look !!!
Over the top glasses either way !!!

Re: Funky Eyeglass Frames Out Of Teak Wood
Boy. Strange things happen. I haven't had those glasses out in years. I ended up looking at CEBE Glacier glasses after I posted, and I got smokin' deal on a pair. I thought, well, when they get here I'll put my lenses in them. They arrived, and one of the frame screws was super glued. I couldn't budge the screw, and couldn't install one of my lenses. So I didn't want to blow out the screw. I couldn't return them if the screw was busted.
As it turned out, the glasses that I bought had prescription lenses in them, so I had no use for them. I asked for a return, and she said, "Since they're prescription they aren't worth returning, Just get rid of them".
Sooo, I had a pair of frames and nothing to lose. The one lense went in just fine since one lense screw worked just fine. I was able to pop out the prescription lense with the glued screw. So, Somehow, I managed to pop my lense into the frames! They're magnesium frames and I was sure that I'd break them. But, it worked. So I got a free pair of frames for my CEBE's. There were no leather side flaps with them, so I bought a piece of leather and made a pair of side flaps.
For the first time in 20 years, my lenses are resting comfortably inside a nice pair of CEBE frames. Total cost was $5.49 for the piece of leather. So I have a pair of wood frames ready if I manage to step on my glasses again!
