GI private purchase watch

Post by GerryD »

Another instalment of my watches.
This a Pierce private purchase American Gi watch, these used to be very common but not so now. They are of a very good specification and this one keeps good time. It has lured hands and number but that is know exhausted and a nice 24 hour chapter ring. Nice screw fixed water proof back.
The US Ordinance Dept did issue watches but not this make or model.
I wear this on occasions and it always attracts comments particularly from the military re-enactors.

I like the individual second hand on the watch. I have a Gotham 17 jewel
square watch that has an individual second hand. I can't remember what
that individual second hand is called now but it is very neat.

I got the watch about 50 years ago from my uncle who passed. My parents
kept it for me until high school age. At the time I only wore it on Sundays.
Watch still works !!

I'm not familiar with the Gotham make in fact I don't think I've ever seen one. If you like to wear the watch and you've had it 50 years I would recommend that you get it serviced as the old oil that lubricates the watch will be getting sticky and maybe making the watch run slow. The small second dial is known as a sub second as opposed to the larger second hand thats known s a sweep second hand.
