Can anyone identify this?

Post by Dickens »

This was found along the Maumee River in Ohio about 60 years ago. It measures 4" long and a little over 1" thick. I think that it's probably a scraper but I'm not sure. Any help in identifying this object would be appreciated.

I would say a axe head. Some did have a channel cut each side to stop the handle from slipping.
I have found similar item in Australia on my farm.

I think that it is called a "celt" (used for scraping hides) .

I think it is an ax head, though being next to a river it could have lost the polish on the ax end.
I will bet the but end is larger around than 1/3 from it, I see a slight recurve to it. On the other hand
if it was used for hide scraping I would expect a higher patina to it or a sharper edge. Most hide
scrapers in my area have a chipped edge with some rounding off. I have a 3/4 grove southwestern
ax found here at the ranch in so.cal. must have been a trade item. Anyway it is cool!
