Hand crank can opener broke last night...
Re: Hand crank can opener broke last night...
I thought you ole jarheads just bit the tops off. I still got my p-38 from the Nam, like Jerry I had to remove it from my carry key ring, man them thing hurts when they open up in your pocket. I disliked ham & mothers and only ate them in dire circumstances.

Dire circumstances. Do you mean like when you were late getting to the C-rat case?bighomer wrote:I disliked ham & mothers and only ate them in dire circumstances.

My daughter gave me a Ez-Duz-It can opener 4 years ago for Christmas. It's American made and I would highly recommend it.

So, Scott. Did you ever come up with a permanent solution for that situation?

I've been using one of those for years. Didn't know it had a name. Just went to the drawer where all that 'stuff' is kept and discovered mine is a "Swing-A-Way". Any one use LRRP rations. Very light weight, all dehydrated. They were okay but no matter how long you stirred them in the water there always seemed to be one or two hard bits that refused to hydrate. Had to be caeful not to break a tooth.

I had the same frustration with a p38 in my pocket, on my keys.
In my box of junk I had a can opener from an old "US" MIL-K knife. I enlarged the hole , and put it on my key ring, then to my amazement it actually is easy to use! Even without a proper handle , the keys can be used as the handle. Problem solved.
Nothing is as frustrating as being hungry, having a can of food, and no can opener.
I remember seeing somebody rubbing a can on a rock until the edges wore off the crimped end and the top fell off. LOL!
To the OP, good job with the SAK, for me if I go backwards it is easiest. On most can openers it is better to go forwards. Also I can second the recommendation for the swing away brand can opener, either hand held or mounted version they work great.

You should check the "best by" date on those Spam cans. I haven't seen a key used in years.

Any vet knows there's no best by date on any can of spam, still can't eat that stuff.

Re: Hand crank can opener broke last night...
The reason there's no "Best By" date on a can of Spam is because there's no such thing...it's never "best" by, on or before any date, even fresh from the Hormel factory. Although, I will admit, Hawaii is the number one Spam consuming state in the nation, and there's nothing quite like a fresh Spam Musubi for breakfast--a slice of Spam fried in Tamari & Mirin on top of a molded brick of white rice sprinkled with Furikake (dried Bonito, sesame seeds, sea salt) and wrapped in Nori (seaweed)--a genuine local style Hawaiian delicacy.
But...to get back on topic...the best can opener I've ever owned is the Swing-A-Way Easy Crank

Q that seems like a awful lot of trouble for Spam .
I take mine straight up, sliced and between slices of white bread.
Or occasionally fried. Because of my ticker I try to limit eating the stuff . . . .

Re: Hand crank can opener broke last night...
In June of 1986 my new wife and I went on a honeymoon which was largely camping out of my pickup. We bought some cans of SPAM because we thought it would be easier to use than bacon. We were not really familiar with it. Well, we had some uh... 'meals'... of it, but, now, 32 years later, we have not had it again. However, I did find this authentic recipe to share, which I have not tried. Meanwhile, I did visit the SPAM museum in Austin, Minnesota some years ago, which was really quite interesting. There was a thirty foot high pyramid of spam cans, a hundred other oddball items and ephemera, including an original letter from General Eisenhower from Europe during the Battle of the Bulge, thanking Hormel for their free tons of SPAM sent overseas to very hungry troops, who were literally living through hell on earth. SPAM is some pretty rough stuff, but worth a try every few decades, preferably fried. No high-blood-pressure clients need apply. It has some cousins, you know-- Vienna sausage, or 'Li'l Boy Peters.
