Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
I bought this knife at an auction on Labor Day. I can’t read the maker. There are some letters and it almost looks like Winchester. What is the best way to clean the rust without damaging the knife? Does anyone recognize this knife and could help me with an ID? I appreciate the help I have received here on this forem! The knife is around 5” long closed.
Re: Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
Rub the rust with the lead end of a pencil . It will remove most of the rust. Then oil it up. [the knife not the pencil].

Anxious to see how this turns out. One thing for sure, it's not a Russell.
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Ok I will try that and post what I find. Thanks!

I have tried to clean it up. I can see an N pretty clear and it looks like an I in front of it but I can’t see much more yet. If I keep cleaning with the lead pencil will I ever clean to much and rub the letters away?

Graphite (aka pencil lead) is a VERY mild abrasive. You’d go through several entire pencils and never remove that much metal. I’m skeptical you’re ever going to reveal much if any more than you have already. Someone may recognize it from what you have revealed. Otherwise it may just be one of life’s mysteries.

UNION ? ? ? I've had some small luck wiping off the pencil lead and using a black, red, or green felt tip wiped off gently. A bit of the ink may remain in the stamp. Different angles of light under magnification sometimes helps bring up an image. Good luck. J.O'.

It looked British to me, too, Roland.

I played around with the image some. I can make out some letters, but that’s about it.

How did you get the markings to show up so much better than in the first 2 pictures of the tang ?

I met an older gentleman at an auction that collects knives. I took it over this evening to him and he had something like real fine sandpaper and worked on it a bit. The letters started showing up more and more.
Re: Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
He did a good job.
Re: Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
Thanks for all your input! I listed this knife on EBay starting at $1 if anyone is interested.

Re: Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
Neat old knife probably ???ington. I don’t think it is a Remington. Harold
Re: Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
I’ve never seen a Remington stamp like that. A lot of English names end in “ington”. That square kick would make me believe that the knife was made before Remington went into the knife business c. 1920. JMO
Re: Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
Thanks for that input! I will take it off EBay since I have it labeled as Remington?.

One thing is for sure, that cleaning regimen works wonders!
If you went through Goins' book page by page you might be able to narrow it down, then look at old cutlery catalogs to see if you can find this knife being produced by one of the possibilities. Could take some time but you might be able to get something definite, just a suggestion.

Thanks for that advice. I need to get me a Goins book.
Re: Approximate age and Maker of this old Knife?
I had someone message me that this is a Rivington Works Sheffield England knife. I searched sold items in EBay and I found one in nicer shape that sold a while back and looks like a match to me. Thanks for everyone’s help!
