Help with Waterville mark

Post by bocaj »

I recently was offered this Waterville knife and liked its age and style. When I look closely the tang stamp has an additional line of “T”
Can anyone help me understand this ?? Thanks ahead of time for feedback

I can't explain the "T", and I don't know co-op operate. Actually all I know about Waterville is what little I read in books.

I think you have a very nice Waterville knife there.

I have a Southington that looks almost exactly like your Waterville.
They stopped making knives with your stamp in 1913.

Looking at the known stamps and given the first 2 lines are Water-/Ville Co there is not one I know that would have a T in the third line - there was one Water-/Ville Co/CONN but not a T as in CT... early stamps marked Waterville/Mfg Co/Waterbury had a T but different stamp... I think the knife is real and not cobbled but no clue on a T ...

Here is a chuckle...
I saw this exact tang stamp on a knife on e-bay...
Got a bit excited because it was rough and the seller wanted 300+ $$
Seller claimed it was pre 1865??

So I wrote him and asked why pre 1865 and what does the T indicate....since he mentioned it..

At least I got a note back but he claimed now he could not remember why he dated it pre 65 and thought the T maybe, could be a maker mark??
So much for looking for advice on e-bay !

I have one that has the "T" also. I know its very unusual. I have no confirmation of dating so I will just call it 1880s
Kind Regards,
Mark
