Green River Knife

Post by profdave »

I have an old kitchen knife that looks alot like examples of Green River Knives I have seen, I am 63 and this knife was old when I was a kid. My question is, Do Green River Knives always have the name on them somewhere? The knife is in great shape, hasn't seen any regrinding or reshaping of the blade or handle that I can see, but there is no name, number or any identifying marks anywhere. Maybe it was made by a maker along time ago for his own use.

I think we definitely need photos on this. Russell made knives in their Green River Works in the mid 1800s and some were stamped with "Green River" on them, but it was not just one style of knife, they made many blade patterns with this mark. Those knives were popular enough that some British companies marked their blades "Green River" just to be competitive. There are also a bunch of different styles and types of knives with these marks, so just saying you have a green river type of knife isn't that helpful for ID. Sounds like it might be a cool knife, but for ID purposes photos will be required.

Thanks for the help. Photos of the knife in question. Btw, those are brass pins in the handle and the blade is full tang.

Green River was popular enough that manufactures other than Russell used this logo on their blades. Green River on the blade doesn’t necessarily make the knife a Russell.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Without any markings near impossible to tell who made your knife. I would guess it’s U.S. made but that doesn’t narrow it down much.

Pretty much was I was thinking. Just thought I would get some other opinions. All I will ever know is that it is old, big and holds a really sharp edge.
