Mystery knife Tang stamp difficult to read

Post by Wharnecilff »

I purchased a number of pocket knives from an estate sale. I cannot read enough of the Tang stamp on this small pocket knife ...Does anyone recognize it? Images attached. Apologies for quality.

Looks like a Northfield Knife Co. UN-X-LD. I'm assuming it is the original Northfield Knife Co: http://www.courant.com/outdoors/hc-news ... story.html

Wow! Thanks for the info twoflowers. Any idea where I might find more info on the original Northfield product line?

Northfield Knife Co. was in business 1858 to 1919. I have never seen an old Northfield catalog but a few might still exist.

No - sorry, I recognized the stamp, but other than the GEC revival of the brand, that's all I know. It might be worthwhile contacting GEC. They might have some info on the previous company.

The archived posts here at AAPK probably gave as much info on any maker as anywhere. A quick "search" resulted in this. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=20621&hilit=Northfield. Be sure to scroll down to about the tenth thread or so for a copy of a history of the company.

I'm sure there's more threads on Northfield (the old original company) if anyone us inclined to look. ::tu::

AAPK member David L. Anthony has published an extensive history of the Northfield & Tidioute Brands in his book Great Eastern Cutlery An American Tradition. You may still be able to get a copy via the following link.

Very hard to find brand and little in the real world to compare it to. Obviously has been well used. To me looks like a Northfield blade in a newer Boker frame. Perhaps an old repair.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
