Any good reason for this handle shape?

Post by RCMsocal »

Hey all -- Was just cruising around Ebay feeding my knife addiction and saw this weird looking knife. Any reason beyond aesthetics?? for the handle?

I'm kind of a mini-fan of the Laguioles (I have two) and have seen those handles but do not care for them. The only reason I've ever been able to come up with for them is "because he could". ::shrug::

It's a shame our French friends are not posting these days. (can't remember their names) They might be able to shed some light on the situation.

Edit: Ah Hah!! I got the brain cells to work. "stancaiman" is the member I'm thinking of. Last active back in November 2017.

Isn't it obvious? It's French so they added a delta wing for high-speed, low-drag operation...

(I think) you say that as a joke but it very well could be reminiscent of the Concorde. After all, they're both French. ::hmm::

That handle shape is also similar to the little critter on the top lock of that knife, also the one on the green bag. I don't know if it's supposed to be a house fly, honey bee or what, some type of insect. Just a possibility. :)

My guess would be for heavy cutting, like leather or carpet. Definately different.

I would have to be a knife you pull towards you when cutting.

I found this page: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ ... -313445381

I suspect it is entirely for show, not function.

Looking at it from a strictly utilitarian, as opposed to the Concordean, point of view, it seems to be a push knife.

I agree, The handle exactly replicates the bee on the lock. Other than that it's terribly impractical. Put it in your pocket? Build a sheath for it? Maybe a backpack!

As Wayne mentioned, it is commonly called a "bee". There are many "bee" designs and some of them are quite artistic. It's a little off topic but that's never stopped me before. Here is a little history I found on the knives while looking for something else.

"Laguiole is the well-known French knife that originated as a shepherd's weapon under Napoleon and has been crafted by the Jean Dubost family since 1920. The bee found on Laguiole knives was the emperor's emblem, chosen for its industriousness. It was placed upon the products that pleased his majesty. Laguiole is not a brand name or label. Rather, Laguiole is a village in the Auvergne region in central France. The Laguiole design and name are public domain and often abused. For real quality make sure that you purchase authentic Laguiole knives and Laguiole steak knives made by a reputable manufacturer."

As you can see, even the French cannot agree on how to pronounce Laguiole.

Some bees.

I believe these were made to be "pushed" in the palm of the hand. For heavy cutting, maybe in leather , sure not for pocket use ::shrug:: Terry

Not sure about that one but I have a knife made by Precise called the Big Paw that is very similar in shape and is quite comfortable in the hand. The OP's knife looks a bit uncomfortable with the sharp edges.
