All About Pocket Knives

[image]b[/image]Any information would be appreciated. The Sharade XLT not sure of the age etc. The other one,does not have a tang mark or any thing that could identify the maker. It appears that it has black macarta handles. The center pin looks like a screw don’t know if original or added. Looks like Ast 34 on the blade,I guess that’s the steel of the blade ( my guess)

The "Schrade" marked knife looks like one of the Schrade-Wostenholm collaborations from 1980. Even though marked "Schrade" it was mostly made by Camillus.
Your other knife is an auto, could be from Asia or a modified USA knife.

buddie: Although you typed ast, I think that is a typo and you meant ATS 34 which is, or at least was at one time, considered a premium grade of stainless steel. It is a Japanese made steel, by Hitachi if memory serves. About two decades ago I recall it being more commonly encountered on custom made knives. Can't really address its popularity today; just have the impression other steels have gained favor.

Does the button release ring any bells for anyone? Time wise ,It has a small hole in the tang with the spring in the handle with a button to go in the hole in the tang when locked down not sure if that was time related to a particular era?

I think the button release is a modification by a knife mechanic. There is a well known guy (whose name i have forgotten) who converts Buck 110 to an auto with a button release that looks similar to the one on your knife. the Buck forum guys would know who i am referring to.

There was a fella that made the 110, and 112 auto conversions for Cumberland Mountain that made them with that square to the bolster push button. I recall this because I was trying to find the best 110 auto and there are a LOT of them out there. I personally prefer the oval button so It's the button style, and placement that sets most of them apart.
I've been looking for what I had read about them, and the best I could find for now was a google image of a rare left side button but it is one of the Cumberlands with their etch on the blade. 1990's maybe?
The earliest ones had just a stamp on the pile side tang... CMKT

Use the Buck tang charts to date your knife, and that will help narrow it down.

Those early Cumberland knives have some value to them so I would keep chasing the leads until you can verify where yours came from.

Ken, i think the auto knife is not a Buck, but i don't have a 110 with me at present to compare with the pictured knife.

I'm having a difficult time with that myself KJ.
The rear scale pins do not look like they are lined up with the bolster correctly, and I don't see a tang stamp on the "show" side.

There is some sort of stamp on the pile side tho, and I would like to know what that one is.

It looks like there are NO tang markings on the black knife. Is that correct?

Is there any hint of an etch on the blade as in the picture I posted?

Here is the pic of the black knife (over head)as you can see no trace of a lettering etc.

With no markings on the blade, at all, what you have is a cool looking automatic pocketknife.
It's only value is what it is worth to you or a potential buyer.

I should have read your first post more carefully where you stated the only mark was AST (corrected to ATS 34).

As posted way earlier it is most likely an Asian knock off but that is not all bad if it is a solid knife.
