Thought I'd get your all input. Second cut stag or not. Thanks

I'm going to say no, it just looks well worn. Here's a picture of the back of my USA era Case 5392. To me, it looks very close, although mine seems to be worn down much more than yours. It's actually darker in real life, kind of like yours. (Click on photo to enlarge)

there is something slightly different about it though. Ive owned several of these over the years the back slab on this one kinda has a translucent look kinda like the second cut bone they did in the 90s.. I like it either way Thanks for the comments on it.....

As i understand it 'second cut stag' is from below the antler surface so it more resembles smooth bone than stag. It has none of the surface texture that makes stag so attractive.
What is the attraction to second cut stag based on ?

I agree with KJ's post, not 2nd cut but just pocket worn stag. If you cut off the outside of a piece of any antler, it will look more like white bone, I'm not sure what anyone would do that for, I guess just to use up all the antler? Nice looking old knife however. ::tu:: Terry

Miked32, Sending some photo's of a piece of extremely heavy antler with the outside cut off and a piece of crown stag. The white antler material is acutally Pere David antler and a lot heavier than most stag. I have cut a lot of stag and different antler material for knife scales and most stag doesn't have enough dense material under the outside to get much of a scale out of. I also sent along a couple of old Case knives that I have with pocket worn stag. To me, stag looses all of it's appeal when the outside is cut off. It could be done with some dye and jigging however. :D Terry

From the viewpoint of the manufacturer, it may be the use of otherwise scrap material (cost efficiency). From the customer perspective, IMHO it does make an attractive knife.

I love and collect stag; in my collection I own some second cut stag that I am very attracted to. The old 1965, 1970 series second cut seems to be very rare, Maybe in its day nobody liked it making it rarer still. Here is an example of an old second cut and a couple from the mid early 80's.

I would agree with Kj not my cup of tea. A nice stag handle knife looks much better. The rarity of the second cut stag examples may add to it's allure though.

Ohh, I'm starting to feel sick ::barf:: ::dang:: ::barf:: I just paid a lot of money for a second cut stag that is on its way to me.

Lightly torched Second Cut Stag. (It says so on the master blade) Note how the untorched part has a slightly greyish cast to it.

If you like it, then it is the right knife for you. What someone else thinks of it is less important.
Because second cut stag is an uncommon material these ones might appreciate in value as future obsessive collectors try to obtain 'one of everything with "S.C.S." '. Greg has said the same. Maybe there will be a rush on SCS handled knives !

KJ, Regardless of others think of scs, it is good material. Stag antler is probably the most dense antler there is, with the proper amount of dyeing and jigging it can be nice material. The natural stag bark will still be the favorite material because of color and texture for me anyway. ::tu:: Terry

"Stag" is a word for an adult male deer. We knifers use 'Stag' to mean the antlers.
By "Stag antler" do you mean stag as in 'antler' ? or are you meaning a certain type of antler such as whitetail, or Sambar ? or ??
Have you noticed much difference in density between antler from whitetail vs mule deer vs elk vs moose ?

Here's a different treatment of second cut stag from what has been shown. Case dyed some of it at various times over the years.

KJ, When I talk about stag, I am referring only to "Sambar Stag" from India. There is a lot of difference between the types of antler but the color and density of sambar stag is what I consider the best. Axis deer is probably the next best but not much color. Elk is at the bottom of the list because of the fast growth it only has a small amount of good quality "bark' , the rest is real porous. I'm afraid the knife makers have clouded up the water by calling any antler or bone that is jigged and colored brown as "bone stag" and etc. Maybe I'm just to picky? Hope I didn't confuse anyone. ::handshake:: Terry
