Toledo Scales

Post by just bob »

I heard someone say they didn't know what the definition of pornography was but they knew it when they saw it. That is how I thought of Toledo scales. No idea of the definition, but knew them when I saw them. In looking on Google I can't find a single definition of Toledo scales. I get hits back to AAPK and other forums where the subject is discussed and opinions are given. Does anyone have a reference book with an actual definition of the term?

Think you know Toledo scales? - think again.

There are other examples out there is you search on Google.

Seems to me I remember reading somewhere that the term originated with knives made with ornately decorated handles in Toledo Spain. Usually the borders were intricate scrolls and the inner parts comprised of scrolls and heraldic animals. Strangely enough virtually ALL of the examples I have were made in Germany and letter openers with or without a knive blade in the handle.

The 3 Fight'n Rooster knives linked to in O.P. do not have Toledo style handles. One of them does not even have metal handles. I believe "Toledo" refers to the metal handles as shown by k7k above.

I was thinking something along those lines, but did you notice one of the ebay sellers was James Parker? Quite a knife authority !

This is one I recently acquired. It even states "Toledo 1879" on the blade. By the way, do knives such as this have much collector value?

I don't know a lot about these. They are nice looking knives. Many times you can go to ebay and search for a knife like you have and get a ballpark idea of value. You might search for Toledo Scales knife and see what comes up. Also search in the completed items. Almost anything with an edge is collectable. I'll bet many people collect Toledo Scales. Good luck in your searches.
