Tang Stamps Charts

Post by Shearer »

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a topic called Tang Stamps where members could post the lists of tang stamps. A member can than match a knife for age and make .

Is this a good idea .What do you think ?

Great idea!
For those that might be unaware, John Goin's Ecyclopedia of Cutlery Markings is a great resource for this information. His last book contains 310 pages of knife company dates and tang stamps. It would be great to have that information available here online also. ::tu::

FWIW; Goins Encyclopedia Of Cutlery Markings, 1998 edition, lists the following tang stamps in several variations:

S. & R. CO. 1902 - 1905

SEARS ROEBUCK & CO. 1902 - 1905

SEARS ROEBUCK & CO. (curved marking) 1902 - 1905. "Naponoch Knife Co. Napanoch, N.Y." marked on the back of all tangs.

WILBERT CUTLERY CO. circa 1908 - 1921

STA-SHARP circa 1927 - 1941

CRAFTSMAN copyrighted 1928

Even though he stated 1928 as a start date for Craftsman, Goins dates the CRAFTSMAN tang stamps as 1941 to present (1998, time of publication).

He also stated that some knives were marked Schrade-Walden N.Y. USA on the tangs, but "CRAFTSMAN" on the knife's shield.

So, you can just collect Craftsman knives that would date from 1941 to now. Or, you could expand your collection all the way back to 1902.

These are great to have gathered together, is one available for Ulster tang stamps? OH

I copied this info on Kabar tang stamps somewhere in the last couple months.
Not sure where I got it from, not how accurate it is.

Here is another bunch of Imperial tang stamps that may vary slightly from those posted earlier.
I believe these were originally posted by LT, (Rich Langston).

The Pal info I found posted in a thread. It appears to be from Sargents #3.
