1973 Stag Set

Post by Blade Runner »

Does anyone know what patterns were in the 1973 Case stag sets? How many sets were produced?

I don't know the hunting knives off the top of my head. Of course even though the sets were released in 1973, the knives in the sets were stamped with 10 dots mostly, some with 9 (some with 8? not sure).

Oh, and as far as I know, there were 2,000 sets, each with 19 pocket knives and 5 hunting knives.

Oh, were they etched or marked in any way, and were they serialized?

No. These were standard production knives, there is no way to tell them from the 10 dot stags that were shipped before stag was discontinued due to embargo in mid 1970.

A couple of points though....the Bulldogs even though they were still in production in 1970 never had dots, they are the same as the USA model.

And rememer hunting knives were never dotted until starting in 1980, so the hunting knives that were in the stag sets will have the USA stamp, just like those produced 1965-1969.

The Cheetahs and 5347SSP stockmans were not regular production Case knives but were made specially for the sets and all with nine dots (did some Cheetahs have 8 dots? I am not sure about that). But even these patterns had no special markings or serial numbers.

There were several other patterns (maybe four total) where some will have nine dots, but I cannot recall off the top of my head what they are....I suspect that Case stamped more blades in 1971 to make a few patterns to round out the sets, where the supply of leftover 10 dot blades was exhausted.

Hey Knifeaholic, Got one more quick question regarding the 73 stag set. You said there were 19 pocket knives in this set, yet you have 22 listed. If you would be so kind as to clarify please. Thank you kind sir.

Well, I am not sure but I have read that each set had 19....that would just mean that not every pattern was represented in every set.

Case's packing slip for that 1973 stag set listed
22 different pocket knives and 8 different hunting knives.
The 2000 sets made contained 18 folders and 5 hunters
They might have mixed up the patterns between sets so
every set was not identical.
$500 when issued, maybe $6000-7000 now

Here's an original Packing Slip from Case. Notice two of some patterns were shipped and some others weren't included. Sorry you can't read it well, if you want a good view of it just email me and I'll send you the full size version. perry@spaceportcutlery.com and yep I do have the full set still in the box.

FYI... If you click on the images, a new window will open and they will appear in normal size (giant size in most cases) . I put in an automatic resize feature a few weeks back to keep them from showing up huge on the thread. They show up smaller than they really are in many cases.

Great information by the way. ::tu::
