To me, the scratches would tell me that it's a synthetic, probably carborundum. I used to carry one as a field stone before switching to ceramic, and currently diamond. It's probably 400 grit.

I enlarged the picture and on the right hand side, maybe some one can fill in the blanks:
......edge, take the
.....rub till you pro-
.........the Razor, and
......and durable edge ::shrug::
On the left end near the bottom the word "Grease" capitalized as was the word "Razor".
Can it be a razor hone?

I am inclined to agree with Phil, I think it is a razor hone.

I believe you're correct Philip!! It's smooth as silk outside of the scratches....

I have what I believe to be a razor hone. It measures about 5 1/4x 2inches and is dark brown not black but really smooth and hard. It has a name on it "Franz Swaty" Austria. I donot believe it is a natural stone but looks similar to the posted piece. Terry

What's the difference between a "Razor Hone" and something like a standard Whetstone or Arkansas Stone? Can you sharpen a hand razor on those as well?

Razor hones are really a fine grit, probably 1200 to 1500 grit and are made for putting a final edge on a razor, they donot remove much metal like a soft arky or a inda stone, so you have to have a fairly sharp edge before using a razor hone, I'm not sure what they are made of but are a polished very hard substance. ::tu:: Terry

It's a razor one, probably one of the many slate type stones imported from europe.
